Transport chiefs to clamp down on rogue taxi drivers

TRANSPORT bosses plan a major clampdown on rogue taxi drivers later this year.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) intends to double the number of inspectors working to check that drivers are complying with rules on vehicle standards, and are tax-compliant and fully licensed.

Chief executive Gerry Murphy said he hoped to employ an additional nine inspectors who would work alongside NTA staff in targeting rogue operators.

The current number of inspectors is nine and last year they completed 14,471 vehicle checks, new figures show.

The inspections resulted in 165 fixed-charge penalty notices being issued, and 52 court convictions.

"We've increased our regulatory model and there's going to be much more enforcement and compliance," Mr Murphy said.

"We have advertised for services from the private sector. We would expect to award that when the taxi bill is passed in the early autumn, because that addresses the allocation of functions to outside support officers.

"We would hope to be able to afford to employ nine more (inspectors). We get reports and complaints from the public and from the industry saying people are operating illegally," he added.

difficult but well over due, if they clamped down on rogue drivers it would enable hard working drivers to get a better slice of the cake.
