Our “net contribution” – what we pay in to the EU minus what we get back in grants and our £3.1billion rebate – soared from £10.83billion in 2011 to £12.23billion last year.

One campaigner said they represented “1.4billion further reasons” to leave the EU.

Not including money back, payments were a record £20billion, Office for National Statistics data revealed.

Britain’s net contribution has now doubled since the economic ­downturn began. Last year the £7.78billion we received back from Brussels was the lowest in 10 years.

Ukip economics spokesman Godfrey Bloom said: “Britain now sends in direct payments to the EU ... a net £1billion per month. This is as we close our A&E, cut defence, cut police and raise tax.”
