Because governments and oil companies don't make revenue from not selling fuel.
It's the same reason we don't have good low carbon technology - it's in someone's capitalist interests to prevent it.

Can only be down to two villains, oil companies (reputed to buy every economy device invented) and car manufacturers with ICE plants worldwide

the day the oil runs out is the day the hidden alternative power source driven cars will appear as if by magic.....you mark my words

It is tatical ploy to remove as much money from the population pockets ! They will then have everyone by the balls, and they will then work for the same wages as they do in India and China............mark my words, we will not run out of oil in our lifetime - no one will be able to afford it. Buses and bicycles along with the rickshaw will be British transport for the masses. That other country in the U.K " London " will be alright

My old Montego used to do 58MPG, it sounded like a tank but by heck was it good on fuel.

Once the oil runs out they will use carbon capture in power stations to extract the co2 mix it with water in a syngas plant and manufacture the fuel all they are waiting for is for prices of fuel to make it economic to make the investment
