Post subject:  Newbie looking for advice
Hi Guys

New to the forum (please be gentle :) )

I've recently decided to take the plunge and get my taxi license. I've spent the last 15 or so years on the big stuff buses and lorries (On agency work, self employed, which usually goes dead in January) and am looking for a change of direction.

I'm living in Leyland and have been here for about a year.
Does anyone have any advice/recommendations of who is looking for drivers/who to steer clear of in the general area. I could just as easily commute to Preston or Chorley.

Where ever I go it will mean some serious study of the area for the knowledge tests (again any advice available or newbie friendly firms that are able to help out.) Not looking for a short cut, but it helps if you know what to learn :wink:

any suggestions welcome (apart from don't do it)

Wherever you choose to work you will need to know most main roads to start with, don't rely on satnavs to do the work for you. The shortest route from A to B is what the councils are looking for, not the quickest. You need to contact the licence department of whichever area you choose to work to find out what their requirements are for taxi/private hire licences. I can't tell you anything about which companies up there are best to work from, sorry. That said, good luck and welcome aboard :D

The best thing you could do is stay with the big stuff, at least you're guaranteed a weekly wage, or you could put your PSV to good use and start a minibus service, plenty of weekend party trips will require one

I suggest you first get your license.

During that process you will find out the info you need, by ringing around the local operators and/or asking drivers themselves.

I suspect you will get a warmer tone from the operators compared to the drivers. :roll: :roll: :roll:

Do a bit of research first there is money to be earned in this trade but only a few earn it the rest struggle firms that constantly advertise for drivers probably have a high turnover with good reason

He would need a CPC (in addition to a DCPC), an O-licence, be able to show cleared funds of £5000 (held 3 months) and have service facilities on tap or an greed hire+service contract

To true, it is unbelievably quiet, just after Christmas, everyone is broke and can't afford taxis, defo worst part of the year
