I had a day trip to the Isle of Wight yesterday, went by train, much cheaper than driving (£25 return from Ashford, Kent, 104 miles each way). Got a taxi from Ryde to my destination and a cab back. The meter showed about £10.25. the driver asked for £9. So I asked him why he charged less than the meter fare. Reply, "cos the guvnor wants us to be the cheapest around". My thoughts were that the guvnor ought to want to be THE BEST around, not the cheapest! The service was good, they said 5 minutes for the return cab and it was, despite being in the back of beyond! The outward journey was a bit rough, no disrespect to the driver, but a WAV 8-seater on the Island roads is not the best ride (no pun intended) in the world.

If you were a regular punter then I could understand some sort of discount realtionship, but giving discount to a tourist who isn't going to come back for ages, if at all, is stupidity personified. |

I do tend to use that firm when I visit the island, usually about 4 times a year. They know my name as their booking system logs the phone number and gives my name!! Big Brother?? If I see a meter price, that's what I expect to pay! the service is usually good, so why underprice it? |

He did, I did! Strange how the philosophy works. Expect £10 for a job, discount it to £9, get £1 tip, so you get £10 anyway.

I hate that; 'How much is that?' - £4.80, 'I've got a discount card' - £4.40 then, 'Take a fiver keep the change' ![]() Or worse, 'How much?' - £5, 'with the the discount?' - £4.50, hands you a fiver, you go to give them the 50p change and they say 'no you keep that'

Customer thinks they are getting a good deal and I get the full fare. |
