Can a Hackney driver remove the top sign on his Hackney whilst working on a wedding?

NO, a Taxi is a Taxi and noting else,
Had this with a council over a Crysler 300c for a prom. we put bows all over top sign and around the plate and the council were present at the prom and happy but said if the roof sign had been taken off we would have had big problems with them.

Most insurances require compliance with Local Authority licensing requirements. Technically, a breach of LA conditions would make the insurance voidable and therefore create a RTA offence.

as there is no size stated in regs for a top light, just make one so tiny its barely visible, and put it right at the back of the roof...

Most public hire insurance covers hire and reward and private and domestic use so you can use your hack without signage,

can you see whats missing?

Quote:
23.0 Roof Signs

23.1 The hackney carriage (other than a “London” style taxi) must be fitted with a proprietary illuminated roof sign of a size of not less than 150mm in height and 600mm in width showing to the front the word TAXI in large black capital letters on a white background.

23.2 The roof sign must be connected electrically to the taximeter and should be illuminated in the hours of darkness when the vehicle is plying for hire and extinguished each and every time a fare is taken within the Licensing Authority of Lichfield District Council.

23.3 The roof sign must be kept maintained in a good clean and legible condition at all times.

We go back to the question I posed, what offence (breach of license) is being committed?

The offence MAY be invalid insurance, dependent upon the terms of an individual's policy. If the roof sign requirement is a bye-law, there could also be a specified offence within said bye-laws.
