Post subject:  Driving Test- Private Hire

In about 20 days Im taking the private hire practical test. Ill be driving my own car (A toyota yaris..Not the car I intend to taxi in).

Apart from the car being clean and my tyres having the correct pressure and thread what else could the instructor look in car (fault wise) and consider not doing the test!?

Surely as long as the car has insurance, tax and mot, all bulbs work, the car drives and stops and sas nothing hanging off you'll be fine. These guys are driving examiners not mechanics. I highly doubt they'll be checking tyre pressure etc.

Try taking a D1 test......

Cant be a self drive hire 17 seater, even though you can hire 1 and have D1 101 on your licence as the test requires you show L plates, its illegal to show L plates if you have a licence for the vehicle....

I passed my D1 in an "L" plated Coif certificated Minibus with a Vosa Operators Licence on the screen...so That was a real for H&R Minibus I guess.

Yet I know a company that seems to switch their couple of Minibuses from being Hire or Reward use Licensed minibus use and Self drive use..How does that work??

Others have full 16 Seaters that are Hire and reward Minibuses one minute whilst permanently adorned with a PH 8 seater LA plate on them..Fair enough that they remove 8 of those Seats for The PH Driver who has not a D1 License, Either way though it means that the PH should really be removed whilst in 16 seat mode or it means that even in 8 seat mode the vehicle is still for all intents and purposes a D1 Coif and Vosa Plated 16 seat Minibus???

Does any government body really really know what the laws are on these vehicles, it seems so opent to abuse it's beyond a Joke.

How many seats does the V5 say the vehicle has? That should define what license the vehicle should or can have. According to our LA and other posts on here, Once a vehicle is council plated, it remains council plated until such time as it is no longer licensed. If this is the case, I don't think the company can legally put 16 seats in the vehicle anymore.

So I can take a DSA "taxi" test in a private car or a plated car, upto 8 passengers seats, if its downsized 12 or 17 seater I cant take the D1 test in the same vehicle be it plated or not 8 seats or 9....

Still confusing

Quote:
Using a hire car

Hire cars can only be used in tests if they’re fitted with dual controls and meet all the other driving test vehicle rules.

I already HAVE a D1 licence (but 101) so why would a hired 17 seater need dual controls?

Post subject:  Re: Driving Test- Private Hire

AFAIK there's no need for a certified PSV or a former PSV to have dual controls for the purpose of a driving lesson or a driving test. After all, the OP already has a driving licence and is basically going for an upgrade?
