I dont know about that jenni, I take it you mean the flag fall? the last two increases amount to 21% in the last two years, I think?

Anyway we can all be reasurred (if they ever get it finished) that we will be able to read the stuff from Napier!

I think the chances of that happening are a lot less than derestricting taxi numbers.

Does anyone in Edinburgh remember this press release by the local council and if they ever received a response from the Scottish executive?

7 September 2000
Edinburgh Council Moves To Ban Taxi Rank Charging...Proposed Amendment To Transport (Scotland) Bill

The City of Edinburgh Council today (Thursday 7th September 2000) announced that it would be making representations to the Scottish Executive in an attempt to introduce an amendment to the Transport (Scotland) Bill which would stop private landowners from charging taxi operators to use taxi ranks on their properties.

The owners of Edinburgh Airport and Waverley Station charge taxi operators for using the taxi ranks on their properties. The City of Edinburgh Council is concerned that this practice limits the number of taxis available to members of the public at these properties, and that it puts upward pressure on taxi fares.

The City of Edinburgh Council's Executive Member for Transport, Councillor Mark Lazarowicz said:

"The fact that taxis are being charged to pick up passengers from these important transport hubs is against the public interest and hinders the delivery of integrated transport for residents, as well as commuters and visitors to the city."

"Passengers arriving at Waverley Station, for example, often don't understand why they can face a long wait for taxis down in the station when there are dozens of empty taxis outside in the streets. We will be seeking to introduce an amendment to the Transport Bill to end these charges."

You missed the other part
""Passengers arriving at Waverley Station, for example, often don't understand why they can face a long wait for taxis down in the station when there are dozens of empty taxis outside in the streets."

It's got nothing to do with that, it's the principle at stake, and CEC are basically doing what they are criticising the station and airport for doing.

How can this be?

According to you keeping a cap on the taxi fleet guarantees us work and the longer the fleet numbers are capped the more work there should be.

Unless of course what you are saying is that restricting taxi numbers does not work. If this is the case it would explain why there are dozens of empty taxis outside the station. This would also explain the increase in the Ph taking a greater percentage of the call work and forcing taxis on to the streets.

I wonder how long it will be before the Ph will be in the Waverley, sorry now I remember they are already doing contract work that City Cabs used to have.

While we are on the subject didn’t City Cabs turn there back on your so called trade and pay a permit fee for working the Waverley. It seems you have a selective memory when it comes to restrictive practices.

I don’t suppose it ever dawned on you that maybe, just maybe it should be us who are charging the Railway Stations and the Airport a fee for providing a service. If you looked even harder you would see that a restrictive practice operates by limiting taxi services to the customer especially at peak times. And by doing so, turns the customer into a commodity to be sold on to someone who is daft enough to pay a permit fee for work they already serviced for free.

So much for your trade and your brothers in arms, I [edited by admin] on the lot of you.

Get the picture!

Oh dear, don't get me going about railway taxi ranks and permits, the words alone just start to make me queasy as a none permit holder

I thought the Council had the power to be in an Act, to take over any private taxi rank
The Councils don't care and the Railways don't care [it seems] about long queues at those ranks

Did you know how Railway taxi ranks permit fees originated ???

In the old days of horse and carriage [hackney carriage] the railways made the Hack owners pay a nominal sum for cleaning up of the horse muck
