Where there are too many taxis... customers can demand lower fares, less time waiting around for a taxi and higher standards.

Where there are too few taxis...
Drivers can demand higher fares, spend less time waiting around for customers, work more sociable hours and get away with lower standards.

Where exactly is the porridge temperature JUST RIGHT? How can the industry achieve a mutually beneficial volume of drivers working at the right times and in the right places.

Should customers be prioritised for bankrolling the entire process?

Should drivers be prioritised for delivering the process?

Should taxi barons / operators be demonised for exploiting the process or praised for streamlining it to the point of growing the marketplace by drawing in ex bus / train users / private motorists / cyclists.

Big questions...

Hacks Cant Demand Higher than Meter fares, they can only set Fares higher if they first set them lower and no hack can demand lower fares, they can only offer lower fares, but where would be the point in doing that if you had first to do that before you higher the cost of hire still higher than your demanded lower hire costs..

Does not make sense really.. :roll:

I demand higher fares (rural area), hang around a long time waiting for punters (not many around), work social hours (no-one goes out at night in the countryside), and keep very high standards. that way the punters that ARE around keep using us because of high standards and reliability. Others in the area may be cheaper, but generally their cars stink of stale smoke and they rarely turn up on time. simples.

It's also down to the quality of passengers you wish to take around. If you want to work your nuts off taking drunken riff-raff around, fine, but you'll do a lot of work for low prices and make little profit for the hours. I think.... :?

Pick any major city... Liverpool for example has been in the news of late, and comments from consumers posted on the online articles often speak of a bygone age (presumably the 70s and 80s) when HC held on to a small cartel of licence holders ... Lack of competition led to sharp hikes in regulated fare structures, resulting in higher cab rental charges and plates changing hands reportedly for £60k. Stranded consumers complained of being held to ransom by cherry picking drivers, some failed to flag down cabs simply because they were on the wrong side of the road (heading away from the drivers' central honeypot).

Fast forward 30 to 40 years and PH now dominate with low fares that are matched by increasing numbers of competitors, customer satisfaction is at an all time high ... HC driver moral is at an all time low and increasing numbers of them resort to illegal plying in neighbouring zones, wearing plates that have plummeted in value.

The pendulum has swung from one extreme to the other, from driver focused to consumer focused, a trend no doubt seen to varying degrees in any major city where PH grew up in the suburbs before strangling the town centres.
