What started as a bad week is now becoming an awful week, Tony Benn Socialist and Mp died today aged 88, he was for many years a titan of debate and initiatives the movement will miss him greatly and remember with fondness his determination and commitment. Many regard him as the greatest Prime Minister we never had. Personally met him many times and Presided over meetings with him on the platform, the most memorable being during the Printworkers Dispute when a we orgainised a public meeting in Hampstead Town Hall, also on the platform was Mitchell McGloughlin Sinn Feinn. During my arranging this meeting i rung Tony up requested his presence at the meeting and informed him of the presence of Mitchell, he was delighted that we had invited Mitchell and appreciated our widening the debate around Thatchers attacks upon the workers and illegal occupation of the 6 County's. Tony was charasmatic character and after the meeting he spent some time with the attendees of the meeting [including my mother and father] discussing many issues including of course his biggest mistake "In place of strife" RIP in peace Tony |

Think I might organise a party on the day of his funeral, to say good riddance as that seems to be the way nowadays when a politician passes on. If it happens to be the same day as bob crows do, the government could make it a public holiday. |

He was hated by the people where I served my apprenticeship because in 1974 when he was secretary of state for industry he visited the plant and made a speech telling the workers how safe their jobs were and then 3 months later he closed the plant. |

Not your typical Labour man by any means, born into money, gave up a title (Viscount Stansgate) to become a "common man" (so he could become an MP), family were Liberals. But there you go What an odd week....Bob Crowe, Tony Benn, and a helicopter crash kills one of Northern Ireland's richest men, flying in a helicopter whos manufacturers he was taking action against on safety issues.... |

How can someone from such a priveliged background ever expect to be the voice of the working classes when they themselves have never been at the bottom of the pile looking up and only ever at the top of the pile looking down. No..this guy did way more damage than good with his self opionated views on what he perceived to be beneficial to the Working class rather rather than actually knowing what would be beneficial to the working classes. |

His 10 greatest quotes: http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/20 ... est-quotes Never met him, but like the dead witch of Grantham, he had sincere conviction in what he said. My brother was in the same class as his son Hilary at Holland Park School. The thing I remember him for was banning pirate radio in 1968 and spoiling the fun for a generation. Roger "Twiggy" Day interviewed him on Radio Kent a couple of years ago and Roger, being one of the pirate DJs finally made his peace with Tony Benn. Tony admitted he had been misguided and underestimated the demand for pop radio. |
