Post subject:  potential earnings/costs of mpv

I am a private hire driver working for a local operator. I am currently driving a ford mondeo but was thinking I could maybe increase my earnings by getting an mpv that will take 6 passengers. I figure i can earn more on airport transfers. Don't really want to get bigger than a 7 seater. Is it worth the extra costs, how much could my earnings increase? It is only a small comapny with 10 cars.

It will get you more work without charging more, but down here we charge 50% more for 5/6/7/8 seater jobs.

I think you will struggle to get 50% for airport runs, but you should aim for at least 20% more.

But bear in mind a lot of old dears hate multi-seaters.

If you have an MPV you will not be able to carry 6 passengers with luggage to the airport without a trailer.

You need to weigh up how many times you are going to need the extra capacity against the increased running costs. I do far more airport jobs in a 4 seat estate car than I do with an 8 seat vehicle.

I ran an 8 seat Merc for a while; the number of times it was used to carry 8 could be counted on my fingers (school contracts excepted), so really a waste of money.

Till you get a 12 seater and remove passenger seats down to 8, you wont have luggage space for 8+8 big bags and 8 hand luggage bags plus camera bags, cool bags, pushchairs, and all the extras a family takes, as i discovered at 5am out in the sticks one day when the dad asked "have you got a trailer...."

Mine was a Tourneo, basically a SWB transit

Ive even picked up just FOUR people who had a new breed of suitcases that could have held a family of 4, thos 4 cases took up all the luggage space

Theres no way an E7 will take 8 plus luggage for instance

I had to pick up 2 passengers from a local hotel and transfer them to Belvoir Castle a few weeks ago. I was told that they had quite a lot of luggage. I put the seats down in one of my MPVs and off I went. As soon as I arrived I was straight back on the phone. We needed another estate car with the back seats down and we still only just got everything in. They were 2 Americans that were over here for the shooting season and they had brought EVERYTHING.

That family who asked if I had a trailer (at 5am when loading the Tourneo) filled the bus, I even had a suitcase rammed between my seat and the front passenger seat, 2 days before the return they rand from the states, had i sourced a trailer, if not could i get a 2nd car, i had a mate go with me and her 407 estate car was full of luggage and i still had some plus 7 passengers.....
