this was sent to me as an email.

See what you think about this and pass it on if you agree with it. We are hitting 95p a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1 a ltr.
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day"
campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just
laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves
by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really
work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and the OPEC
nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we
need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the
market
place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we
consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price
of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing
their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the
idea:

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest
oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling
any
petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their
prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an
impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers.

It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point...

keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at
least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)...and those 300 send it to at least ten
more
(300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the
sixth
generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers!

If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each,
then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level
further, you guessed it.....THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. (and not
buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this
email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION
people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!! I'll bet
you
didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together
wecan make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this
messageon. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE.
It's easy to make this happen.

Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda, Tesco,
Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso.

It's an interesting idea but I think that there are a few weaknesses in the plan:

1. Who owns the petrol stations? It's not the oil companies so they aren't going to lose out too much. They can just sell the oil and/or refined products in a different country.

2. Who supplies the supermarkets? Tesco don't have their own refineries, they buy it off the oil majors. If you buy petrol from the supermarkets then the oil majors still make their money.

3. Given that most of the price of a gallon of petrol is tax, the oil companies don't have much scope to reduce it drastically.

There is one reason why the oil price is where it is. China's growth and ever increasing consumption mean that supply and demand are very finely balanced at about 83 million barrels per day (up from about 72 million in 1996). Supply has not kept pace with the growth in demand (look at Shell's problems with its reserves). As long as there are fears about the continuity of supply (Iraq, Saudi Arabia, US refinery explosions), then prices will remain high. The sort of action that you are proposing will have absolutely no effect other than to put a lot of independently owned garages (such as the one in my village) out of business.

Incidentally, when did Exxon and BP merge. The last time I looked, they were still separately listed companies

the dundee cabbies have a way of beating the extra fuell costs, and it works, in dundee al least , when they drop off a fare insted of driving to the nearest rank they simply sit where they are and turn off the engine ,
start counting your money or pretending to use your using your mobile phone covers the situation, in dundee with its large increase in hacks has hardly any rank work available,so whats the point of heading for a rank ? so by sitting where you drop off you do an average of 20-30 miles less per shift which in return covers the extra cost, try it you will see a big difference

Ah you state cover the situation, does this mean that you do not have the right to cruise, I know the origional qoute was to save fuel, but surely cruising can allow you to pick up that extra job if you are allowed to do so in your area, fraid not for me, rather keep on the move even tho it costs

the extra job no longer exists in dundee apart from sat night, between the extra hack plates plus mobile phones it,s all gone, were all sat night hack work six nights private hire work now , i sometimes think the private hires are picking up more fares off the street than i do

i just thought that it was interesting idea, and yes it does trip up on some
points.

as for dundee wavs money saving ideas,

The only difference i would see is a drop in money.
Keep moving mate cos if you dont start cruising the P/H will have all the work or you could get mugged if your counting your money.
If your not seen, a potential punter cant flag you down can they?

I think hes pulling your leg a bit about the PH in Dundee :D I could probably walk up the Hill and out Strathmartine Raod to the Kingsway (thats a mile and a half up from the City centre out on one of Dundee's main arteries) and i'd be lucky to see a PH, since there are hardly any in Dundee. ANyway, they have no roof lights and no door advertising, so are basically invisible to the public, so I doubt if they do much pirating, especially with mr wav sat at the Hill clock with his engine off :wink:

simply name the cheapest five suppliers and most are happy although some queing maybe needed, interesting to note that none of the actual producers are on the list bp, esso shell? how can their prices be dearer than the companies whom they have sold to?
