Hi No, it's not a job Never been on here for a while but know someone will know the answer. I've taken my taxi abroad on holiday before but just found out I probably wasn't "fully" insured. My insurance company won't cover me "fully comp" - only 3rd Party. Don't even think that includes fire/theft too. Looking online I think it's going to be around £100 to be fully comp in the EU for 2 weeks. My question is, are there specialists in this insurance (short term EU cover) or could I get a 2nd policy (state the vehicle is for social purposes) and then cancel the policy when I get back, therefore only paying for a months worth of insurance. Some say you can't have 2 policies but then a few people online are stating it's only illegal to "claim" on 2 policies - it's fine to actually have 2 policies which seems correct if I would require a specialist short term company. Obviously the car wouldn't be getting used as a taxi for 2 weeks so surely I can sign up stating its for social , domestic ??? Any thoughts? Cheers |

Wouldn't normal travel insurance cover property up to a certain amount? And would that amount cover you motor, and and third party liabilities? |

Ask your broker to cover it fully comp for the time you're away. Mine are fully comp wherever they go. |

Cheers for the replies guys. I've been to the south of France and Belgium before and it's funny the looks you get from people....."that must be a good job!" I've been in touch with my broker and I can't get fully comp...they don't do it for travel to the EU - they are only prepared to give me the Green card (which they are trying to say is £15! - jokers) As I understand it I don't require the green card for 99% of France / Belgium / Holland. - and it should be free anyway I believe. What my main concern is would be theft, and any advice on how to cover this would be appreciated on this. The Caddy is worth about £20k. Cheers |

our taxi/ph policy = commercial = doesn`t cover travel abroad or covers only 3-rd party even if you`re fully comp. I travel quite often through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and always buy additional EU inusrance for ~£60 for 18 days (Aviva). that`s what I do but ask your insurer first about cover for commercial vehicle. http://www.moneysupermarket.com/car-ins ... ean-cover/ |

also, can you/I remove a roof light from a saloon taxi when (way) out of my LA? it would be bad luck to get spotted by my LO in Spain, and also, any local cops might get suss if i drive round with it on, but.......as an EU resident, from an EU member state, could I take an advance booking to Barca airport from my hotel? |

Cheers again! Thanks very much for all the information and input - I'm going to take a look at the £60 with AVIVA. That seems just about acceptable. Wouldn't mind if the car was worth nowt but would be happier known it's insured correctly (fully). Good idea about top sign too!! ta. |

Hi Just gone onto http://www.aviva.co.uk/short-term-car-i ... cover.html When you click on that link there is a further link which takes you to https://www.dayinsure.com/quote/aviva After stating I want 12 days the quote is around £78 However, it's quoting "comprehensive European Cover". - Comprehensive cover whilst you drive in the From £77.17 The figure states it comes to £162 (?) I'm baffled here totally. Why would someone pay Aviva £78? For Third party insurance? A quote from their website: "Temporary car insurance cover for full business use available (except for hire and reward)" ...back to the drawing board for a bit. |

The PDF file terms and conditions state: Your car is protected with Short Term Insurance from Aviva (UK only) Loss of or damage to your car If your car is lost, stolen or damaged, we may: pay for your car to be repaired; replace your car; or pay you a cash amount equal to the loss or damage. I think this is only if it's stolen in the UK (as title states). I think that's why you have the chance to pay the extra £77 for full EU cover. Am I looking at this from the wrong angle or am I being totally thick here. Cheers. |

Just checked on other forums like piston heads and there are a good few posts claiming paying extra for EU cover is like throwing money down the drain as it's usually always 3rd party cover anyway. If they do claim "comprehensive" cover, all insurance companies claim difference variations on this for EU cover. If people really want fully comprehensive you're paying top dollar basically - which I think is going to be around the £160/£200 for 12 days or so. Which takes me back to an earlier question. Aviva are quoting me £350 for car insurance (obviously not as a taxi). I can pay £28 per month which includes foreign travel with fully comprehensive cover. Is there anything stopping me taking this policy out on the day I leave the UK, pay the £28, then when I come back cancel the full policy? Fingers crossed I don't need to claim, but if I do, I would claim off Aviva if the claim is abroad and my taxi policy if an accident is in the UK. Is that being a bit naughty or perfectly legal to do? Cheers. |
