I watched a programme on channel 5 last night about crime in London. It was basically about how effective the cctv is for catching street criminals. There were 2 chaps in the control room looking at 70 camaras. During their 12 hour shift on a Friday night they assisted it 6 crimes, 3 each. these included a gang of lads on bikes who allegedly had a gun. This also needed the police helicopter, and some drug dealing. At the end of the programme the narrator stated that following the nights activity 2 people had received a caution for drug dealing. That is a hell of a lot of resourses for 2 cautions!!! |

This has been my point entirely about the over-provision of CCTV. It simply isn't cost effective either. It detected what, 3 crimes, but did it stop any? Nobody knows. |

A bored CCTV operator can cause more mayhem on a single shift than most criminals can create in a month, imagine the cost that tens of thousands of these bored mischief maker could induce by means of their having half a braincell between the lot of them. Take every camera away and we'd save £billions on police wild goose chases and then the police could focus on real crime and not fictional crime. |

Local authorities in London use most of their CCTV cameras for raising revenue. Anyone who stops for a millisecond can expect the full weight of the councils resources to come after them! |

There was one cracking bit where the police caught an illegal hotdog seller. They took all his hotdogs and threw them into a rubbish bin. They then sent the chap on his way. 15 minutes later he was digging the hotdogs out of the bin and selling them again.
