Speaking to another driver today, he rents a car, £57 a day, 5 days a week...

hes fed up cos hes only getting £400 after paying everything for 60 hours a week

Hes 69 and doesnt touch the money cos hes got his state and private pension!

I asked why he does it the, "cos id get bored"

If he pays tax on his earnings he is doing nothing illegal.

Depending on his private pension, he may not qualify for pension credit. He won't be paying any national insurance, just tax on the lot.
I have a retired army Captain working for me. He does around 20 hours a week PAYE.

I don't know about clockwork but everything he does and everything we ask he to do is written down, not always in triplicate though.

I bet he's only declaring £50 per week, state and private pension plus his earnings I bet he's raking in over £700 per week which puts him in the high tax bracket.

£36,400 per year less £10,000 personal allowance does not put someone into the higher tax bracket.

isnt 40% from £32K?

Your taxable income includes:

all pension income (including State Pension)
employment/self-employment income if you keep working

almost all bank and building society interest (the 'gross' amount before tax is taken off)
dividends (income from shares)
income from property after expenses - but not the first £4,250 if you rent out a furnished room in your house (£2,125 if split jointly between you and your partner)
income from abroad (overseas pensions have a 10% deduction so you're only taxed on 90% of the total amount)
some benefits, including Carer's Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance and Incapacity Benefit

On earnings of £36,400 you take off the personal allowance of at least £10,000 sotax is only payable on £26,400 So that makes it basic rate.

But he would have to include all income, pensions (2) and any interest, he could be close....
