Post subject:  New ph driver on Wirral, insight and tips please.

Im due to start very soon, most likely on Monday 20th.

Although I passed all the requirements and the tests I don't know much about it to be honest, havent had anyone to be able to talk about this line of work with, this is making me feel nervous about starting, so many aspects are unclear to me at the moment so if someone could give me a few tips and advice, that would be great.

I know that earnings can be varied, but can I expect to make £100 a day after diesel if I start at 6.00-6.30am? Ive done all my calculations and if I do 5 days a week earning £100 a day after diesel that would work well for me, also having the 6th and 7th day of the week incase I have any other outgoings that week.

any advice would be great, thanks in advance

I think you're being optimistic about the £100 per day after diesel. Also if you plan to only work 5 days without any weekend nights you could be pushing it to make enough money at this particular time of year, obviously it'll pick up towards Christmas. You should find it busy the weekend of Halloween tho  It is swings and roundabouts here at the minute you can make your money but I think you're going to have to be flexible with your hours. If you own your car out right that helps if not you'll have to take the HP payments or settle payments out of that, there is the insurance payments to come out as well as your radio settle. All in all if you don't own your car out right you're looking around £250 mark before any fuel and before you put money away for maintenance if it is your car. Don't forget if it is your car you'll have the plate fees, road tax and badge to save up for. If you don't mind running to airports etc it may be an idea to get your own operators licence as well so you can do your own work if you wish.

Good luck :D

Thanks for the advice, I would be happy to work nights and more than 5 days if need be.

Im going to need to get a settle car for now as im not in any position at the moment to buy a car, looking at all the overheads and my other outgoings it looks like I'll barely make it, im 50/50 at the moment wether I should go through with it or not, ive got a young child to look after and my partner is a carer so she can't go and get another job so I feel like all the pressure is on at the moment, lol.

With mixed hours you should be ok but stick to the hours you're out for you never know what may come your way. I'll ask a couple of the drivers that cover our school runs what it's like because they work days for other companies so they'll have a better idea what to expect.

MK- the first thing you do when you get behind the wheel of your PH, is to tell every customer, you are just out the wrapper and you would appreciate any help they can give you and take it from there. :-| You might be surprised how generous some people can be.

That's what I did when I started, the people of Wirral aren't all bad, in fact most of them are ok with you if you're ok with them

Not the best question to ask me

1. I hate daytime traffic so it's nights always
2. I'm not that fond of shoppers so nights it is
3. I don't really like kids either, so nights it is
4. I hate Manchester airport so that's out but Liverpool is ok but only of a night, so nights it is
5. I don't have a family at home so I can do as I please, so nights it is

You do what suits you and you will figure it all out. I would say include Saturday in your rota tho. Don't forget to have a break halfway through the shift but don't get too comfortable at home

Yeah I was planning on doing Mon, Tue, Thurs, Fri and Sat.

Just worried at the moment wether I should do it or not as i need to clear around £350 before I take any for myself, (£270 for car, insurance & radio) and £80-90 for rent, not including other bills which aren't as expensive but still all add up. #-o

You may still be able to get help with rent if your income is low enough
