Post subject:  Using satnavs?

Just started driving, I've lived on the Wirral all my life but now and again there will be a road or other location which I will be unsure of its whereabouts, most of the time the passengers have been happy to direct me but I feel a little stupid not knowing myself, I've thought of buying a satnav or using Google maps on my phone for when this occurs, what do you think?

Also does anyone have any idea on how much (roughly) data Google Maps from phone would cost? I'm currently on Pay & Go so I don't want it to eat up all the credit but I may get a contract with data if it works out better? Or would I be best just getting a standalone satnav?

Cheers in advance

What private hire firm are you with? i thought most of them provided a sat nav and routed the journey for you on the data-head.

The problem i find with a sat nav is they take too long to enter details if your looking for road name it brings them all up in the country! If you are going to use google maps (even though they aren't the shortest routes) you can move your pay as go over to Gif gaf you can get ulimited everything for around £15 a month with no contract.

Ive been doing the job years but every now and then u get awkward addresses or forget where somewhere is. I always use Google maps, although I'm on a contract I never exceed my 500mb limit. Mind u I only use it sporadically now but never seemed to use much even when I first started. I find the best way to do it is find out where the address is on the map and then formulate a way to get there in your head. I only ever use a sat nav now on longer runs.Good luck.

I prefer map-nav, far less distracting than a screen glowing in my line of sight all the time.

My garmin is supposed to do that. It works fine when I want to use it as my bluetooth for the phone but I have not yet managed to get it to find an address through voice control. I have had it for a couple of years now.
