Some of our not so bright student A.Hoes in my cab the other night.

Only a small fare back to campus about 5/6 of them, as ever one or two no money and the rest dropping their effing pennies countless times on the floor and the meter is on stop. They count, and recount, and generally take the pizz with the amount of time we are stopped - a 3 year old could have sorted it out quicker. So after the umpteenth time I say to them....guys I am going to have to put the clock back on if you do not sort this out!

Boy did that raise their awareness, followed by I am "studying law" (you cannot do that). Me then retorting.... then you need to pay more attention as you got into the cab without the means to pay - that is an offence, also you are stopping me from going about earning my legal livelihood blah blah blah - anyway believe it or not, it ended with smiles.

A question - If a meter has been stopped at the end of a journey, what would be a reasonable time to restart it in the event of a customer being awkward i.e an excessive amount of time to vacate the cab?

it wont read any different if they are slow unless the "clock" is operational on the meter, in effect charging for waiting

if they dont step out you cant restart it, id never stop a meter before i was paid, in fact you only start a meter for a new fare

the clock function - if running - will charge for waits at traffic lights and roadworks too

IMO at any time. The hire doesn't end until they have paid up and removed themselves and their property from the vehicle.

which will only cost more if the clock timer is on though

That is what is generally thought of as restarting the meter (from it's "stopped" position.)
If they are still in the vehicle, the meter shouldn't be cleared (for hire) until they are out.

I have always been led to understand that once the journey ends......then the meter is stopped. The same practice arose over wheelchair jobs........A big hoo haa arose over drivers who charged more after taking time to get ramps out, unloading the WC and then stopping the meter.....and then charging more.

You can stop and restart a meter anytime if on stopped, just press hired and it will continue from where it was, he didn't mean stop, clear it and restart
