Welcome aboard, I don't really know the area you wish to work but I don't think you'll earn much if you stick to school hours. I guess when you don't have the kiddies you could work outside those hours to compensate. Good luck anyways

Evnin all. Been lurking for a few weeks now, like a lot of new posters im in a simlair boat, probable redundancy soon. My plans are to start taxi driving fro a living, im 45 and financially reasonably ok, i will get a right good wedge on finishing and am not looking to for 1000s a week. A steady income of hours to suit me. young kid that lives with ex, but stays with me when i want. Have ££ for start up not a problem, am aware of the tests/docs needed thanks to this site but a few questions please. 1. realistic earnings during school hours, would like to work this as much as possible as looking to have kids more now change of carrear, im based notts derby border and would be looking at working for a local company at first but could have my own car(s) if needed, can still do the weekends. nights etc as oldest 15 now. Anyone with any exprience my area. should i forget it and invest in a subway franchise, lol? Im a mechanical engineer if it helps and could maintain my own cars(s) Like i said, looking at working hours to suit me, used to nights, long shifts etc have start up cash etc, the thought of it suits me down to the ground, however reading on here im getting some doubts? Lot of doom and gloom. Any advice please? |

Edit. My point being rather than work 5 days officehours at some agency or contract shifts maintance at power staions etc if would rather potter about breaking above minimum wage at hours to suit me, as time off at my choice is just as important as £££ coming in. Thanks |

Problem with this game is you have to work 3-4 days just to cover your costs, everything after that is profit. If you have the money a Subway (or KFC,McDs etc.) is a better choice. Higher guaranteed income, even paying a manager to run it for you whilst you put in minimum effort will leave you with more than driving a cab. |

You'd make more filling shelves at your local asda or tesco than you would cabbing some places. And you won't blow all your redundancy money doing it. |

If you can't get out whatever you put in and more, within three to five years, don't do it. And in this case, don't do it. Work as a driver if you want to earn a wage but don't expect to get a return on your investment and then some, as the owner of a cab. You might have a greater flexibility of hours to work around your kids but don't expect to see a real return on your investment. You will spend lots of time hanging out working dead hours to pay for your cab and your radio/app dues before you make a buck for yourself.  Really, it's about not having an unrealistic expectation of what it means to be a cabby and who knows, it might be the job for you?

Advice dont come into this trade its populated by the biggest collection of mugs the world has ever seen you will be cheated abused exploited assaulted and possibly murdered regarded as a cu*nt by the majority of the population and treated as one ........................your investment will vanish and within a few years your be bankrupt DONT DO IT Any advice please? |

If you have no problem working when the rest of the world is playing out and having fun. Go for it. Already in my very short time I have noticed that you need a big bladder. A calm head. The ability to repeat yourself to EVERY punter over and over again. It is a very lonely job. But put in the hours and it aint too shabby. Dont expect to be rich. As I was told. Look after the punters and they will look after you. |

Thanks I dont think you stated where you are, or your age, or your time spent holding a DVLA licence, or if you have any specific trade or skill....If I was a rocket scientist, brain surgeon or even a gas plumber id maybe not taxi drive.... |

Work 12 hours Fri and sat night, bank hols , Xmas , etc etc and you can do OK. Work school hours and you'll be unlikely to make much, unless u can find a very rare hourly paid taxi job. |

I only work school hours but have my own school contract, saturdays i work cash round the town till 7pm then again i am an owner driver not depedent on a base for work |
