How does it work then?

Do they still need licencing by the local council and a dbs check?

or can any old pervert pick you up.

Also why is it such a big problem?

I am not all up to date with uber so have no idea tbh.

Drivers, vehicles and operators need to be licensed.

Uber will concentrate on the coporate level custom.

If I was an independent hackney, or a small operator with a tasty motor, I would consider it.

You would probably have to be licensed as a private hire driver, with all relevant documents submitted, etc, before they allow you to drive for them (in London, at least).

Over in the U.S. it is different, where anyone can just sign up, and drive (as long as your car meets their criteria)


As there's no minimum hours/shifts set, you can work as little or as much as you like, which would suit an independent/small operator (as Sussex suggests), to use Uber to fill in gaps around existing work, or when times are quiet.

Yes, they take a slice of the fare (how else are they to make money?), usually 20%. They do have overheads such as office rent/staff, marketing, card transaction fees, marketing, etc, to pay for, just like any other operator.

No different than paying an operator £100-£150 a week rental/circuit fee. As someone else said here previously, paying Uber 20% for each job is paying as you go, while paying the fixed rent/circuit fee is like a contract - which you have to pay anyway regardless whether or not they give you work.

In London, other similar apps are used such as Bounce, Wheely, Hailo, and Splyt (which is about to be launched). Most drivers sign up to more than one, and paying each job their 20% cut, or whatever it is, is going to be cheaper than paying each app £150 a week to work for them.

No.

Uber has their own operator's licence (licenced by Transport for London, trading as Uber London Ltd, no. 7979, expires 30/05/2017), hence you will need to submit your documents (driving licence, MOT, V5, PH driver and vehicle licence), before you can start working for them, which will need to be verified and checked before they will allow you to receive work from them.

In London, that is not necessary.

You can apply and drive for any number of operators as you wish without the need of an operators licence.

I believe in other local authorities, you have to submit your PH driver licence to the operator you work for, hence you can only work for one at a time?

As I mentioned, most PH driver's who drive for app-based firms, usually and can work for more than one.

They will may also drive for a traditional office-based minicab operator, and use the apps, when times are quiet.

I assume that UBER have got a Birmingham operators license so to get work from them under the current legislation would require both the driver and vehicle to be licensed by Birmingham.
