Hi Guy's and Gal's,

I have been working for an energy company for the past 8 years and it's looking more and more likely that they are soon to make me redundant,I have been looking for employment elsewhere but there really isn't a lot about. However my local private hire Taxi firm are looking for drivers, I popped in for a chat the other day with their training manager. The manager told me how it all worked and he informed me that they would pay for all my training in advance in exchange for a 12 month contract to stay working with them after I start out on the road which seems fair to me.

I am struggling to get my head around it all though, I have done some rough calculations on my over heads / costs and have come up with a figure of around £360 a week to pay out. This is based on rent of the radio, taxi insurance, car loan and fuel costs. I was told by the manager that I could earn anything up to £1000 a week is this true ?. That said and me not knowing much about your jobs apart from your'e self employed could any of you please advise me of the following questions:-

1. How many hours / day's a week do you work ?

2. On average how many fares a week do you get ?

3. Roughly how much do you earn before deductions / over heads ?

4. Do you enjoy doing the job ?

5. How much is your'e weekly fuel bills ?

6. Roughly how much is the Taxi insurance for a new taxi driver ?

I am asking all these questions because I really like the idea of the job and I think I will enjoy doing it, but having a young family and a mortgage I feel I need to know as much about the role and costs involved as possible so any help and advise that you guy's and gal's can give me would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance Matt.

4. Do you enjoy doing the job ?I used to but after 20 odd years I hate it

A grand a week eh....

Buy a comfy car and pillow. Cos for that kind of money. You and your car will be soulmates.

IOW. You will not see much other than a windscreen and a screen for jobs.

He is not being realistic with you and a 12 month tie in is a long time to work for a company who chits on you when they want.

The job is not luxurious. It is rife with people struggling to make ends meet week in week out.

I think that this sort of contract is unenforceable. If they are going to basically "loan" you the money for your training they would probably need a credit license or again, it would be unenforceable.

Its quite possibe to TAKE £1000 a week, however to MAKE £1000 a week nett youd need to TAKE £1500 a week GROSS, depending on where you are and what sort of firm they are £1500 is pushing it to say the least

Heres what you do, seeing as all youd do is DRIVE and assuming you can do that already, ask your licensing dept for the driver badge application form and the list of fees....

With your own paid for badge you are a free agent, the YOU have the whip hand

Unless the fares are sky high around your manor, or you fancy working 80 plus hours a week, then even taking a grand isnt possible.

Around here, 12 hour shifts on Friday and sat nights can net you 200 Each if it's busy. Week nights 100 If lucky, usually in the region of 60 to 80. don't get me wrong, there are times I've taken over a grand but these occasions are few and far between.

Take what base owners say with a pinch of salt, afterall it's in there interest to get you onboard and get your 80-150 (whatever there rental fee may be) per week.

Don't get me wrong the job ain't all bad but in my experience if you want to earn a decent wage then you have to pretty much forget having a social life. Family parties etc can be forgotten about.

You could of course go on days or eveN depending on your location go independent as a hackney driver but most areas where you can easily obtain a hackney plate will be saturated with drivers and pickings slim.

If you can earn a £1000 a week they wouldn't be looking for drivers

Or put it another way, you'd have to take £20 per hour, every hour, for 50 hours. If you want to TAKE HOME £1k then it's about £27 every single hour.
You'll be lucky to average £14 per hour (deductions to come off that!)

1. How many hours / day's a week do you work ?

3 days a week off. 44 hours a week. 10am till 4pm. 4:30pm if I have a job at the time. Home to see my boy before bed and have dinner.

Back out at 6pm until 11pm or 11:30pm if I get a job pub closing.

Going onto 2 night shifts a week as of next week though.

2. On average how many fares a week do you get ?

Varies from day to day. Always got someone in my car. Not waited around for anyone yet apart from in traffic trying to get to someone.

3. Roughly how much do you earn before deductions / over heads ?

Again, depends. Can range from county to county. I need to find £10 for every 100 miles driven for fuel. £165 a week for my car all in. £120 a week for office hire. But I do 2 night shifts a week now and get £30 per night off my bit. So I only pay £60 a week as of next week.

4. Do you enjoy doing the job ?

I love it. Apart from after 11pm at the weekends. But you get to find out quickly about keeping doors locked and talking through the small window you have open. Groups of ladies that are drunk will do your nut right in.

5. How much is your'e weekly fuel bills ?

As stated. £10 per 100 miles driven. I fill the car to the brim. Put fuel in at the end of each shift. Always prepare for a big job.

6. Roughly how much is the Taxi insurance for a new taxi driver ?

I was quoted £66 a week for an octavia. New driver, 38 years old. No accidents or points.

I am asking all these questions because I really like the idea of the job and I think I will enjoy doing it, but having a young family and a mortgage I feel I need to know as much about the role and costs involved as possible so any help and advise that you guy's and gal's can give me would be very much appreciated.

My positive about the job. The chance to go home when I want. If I want to pop out and earn enough for a meal as a treat with my better half. I can in short time. If I want to just pay my bit and the bills. I can get away early and enjoy the evening. If I want a little bit more than normal in my pocket. I work for it.

I set a target. I hit it. Go home.

Example. Got to work the other day. Pulled up at the hospital. Job came through. Medical package to Carlisle. Drop, collect, return. £140. One job and was home in just over 2 hours.

Negatives

The office aint your friend. (well not mine at least)
You get head numb with the same questions over and over again.
Drunks.
People sneezing in the car and not holding their nose.
People honking of weed, pish, BO, general lack of hygene.
Wimmin thinking they can get away with mouthing off.

Soon as you put your magnets on the car. Every driver on the road seems to refrain from being courteous and think you are an asshat.

You need to understand. It is not a walk in the park. You will be battered by the time you get home. Your back will know you have been driving after a fortnight. Your eyes will be bloodshot after a long shift.

It takes me a fair few hours to relax after a gruelling session.

My gripe is students living in a street with only enough space for one car to pass and it being about a quarter of a mile long with nowhere to park. They are NEVER ready and I refuse to knock on the door after I send my ringback request.

They get 120 seconds and I am away for the next fare.
