To settle a debate....

Can a Private Hire work with no Radio - i.e not tied in with a base??

As I say it's to settle a debate.

Cheers

Providing you have got an operator's license, of course you can, and more than you would have thought do.

Who ever gives you your work will need a P/H operators license. If you intend to get your own work then you will need an operators license in addition to your other P/H licenses. You will also probably have to convince the planning and licesning dept that your premises is suitable for the business it is intended.

If Charlie is talking about Scotland then isn't it the case that there's no base licensing?

There was a thread earlier in the year about a consultation about brining in op's licenses:

If there's nothing in the legislation about it, then it's probably down to each individual council Charlie.

Cheers mate

I know Glasgow states you must work via a base - but I am having a debate about North Lanarkshire - can't see anything on their website.

What's unsuitable about your home, don't you park your car there at night already?

Now if you had dozens of licensed vehicles, and you work in an area that stipulate that vehicles return to base when free, then maybe it isn't feasable.

But if it's just you, then go for it.

There's not third-tier licensing in the Civic Government Act, so no base licensing on the English model (I think that's what they mean when they refer to operators: we usually use operator to mean the vehicle license holder).

So basically it seems to be down to each council to make its own rules, but there's no provision in law for licensing base stations.

There are plenty of taix drivers in East Fife who operate via a mobile in the car, so I can't see why PH shouldn't be the same, but we don't have many PH. And a radio woudln't be needed if you were only doing PH runs from home.

I don't know if you read the Executive's consultation there was some discussion in there about suitable premises, or whether a place of residence could be used and whether a call could be taken in a car.

So there could be big changes for some, especially if calls in the car are barred.

But for the normal taxi and PH offices it will really just be a case of getting another license.

I wasn't aware your enquiry was about Scottish legislation. The rules I mentioned are for England and Wales, Scotland is somewhat different so I understand.

All you need is a working horn, an ability to crawl along flashing your headlights whilst leaning towards the window shouting 'Taxee? Boss? Taxee?.

Easy really. Image
