London is restricted - the method employed to exercise those restrictions is the knowledge, which restricts the number of drivers, and hence the number of cabs available to serve the public.
Regarding the plates there is no value in them, as they are only restricted to taxis where the owner has opted to participate within the regulated sytem - vehicles described as minicabs are the alternative unregulated system.

At a rough guess I would say that at 10,000 vehicles they would match the highest in the provinces, but they would clearly be worth less if there were 15,000.

£700 for nights and £500 for days per week is a conservative estimate, I would expect higher than that in the Capital.

If London plates were restricted does anyone have an opinion on how much they might fetch. Considering you still had to take the existing knowledge test and buy a cab would those three elements likely dissuade people from taking the knowledge test and becoming London Cab drivers? If plates had been restricted does anyone think it would have served as a detterent to taking the knowledge test and how many less Cab drivers do you think London would have today if any? Regards JD

London does not operate quantity control of vehicles but what if it did? At the moment anyone can if they wish plate sixty thousand vehicles but finding the drivers would be another issue. What if London restricted vehicles to ten or fifteen thousand? What would be the likely plate value? Regards JD

If they restricted them then IMO plates would go for a huge amount of money. Possibly over 100k. There are many fleet owners that rent out their motors to licensed cabbies. The rent for such rentals would go through the roof. I wonder what the T&G would do then?

Even if plates were capped at the existing number of nineteen thousand or so, I would still think plates would command at least in the region of 100 grand. That is based on the earning potential of a double tracked cab with a minimum gross income of 1200 pounds per week, per cab. £700 for nights and £500 for days per week is a conservative estimate, I would expect higher than that in the Capital. And then all the plate owners, be they one-man bands or fleet owners, would be desperate to dilute the KoL. Love to see how they would survey demand though.
