1991 £10 for a hackney badge working on percentage 33% local bases did not have owner drivers then or if they did wanted high rents and gave priority to percentage drivers so wasn't worth it but only 18 hackneys in town then and no suitable rank. Only after myself and several other drivers started an unofficial rank did the council eventually give us one somewhere where there was a descent chance of picking up work BUT that was followed by the Peterborough invasion so nowadays up to 100 cabs in town constantly changing

1988 £19 for the badge and that was it, no checks with the police only a medical. You could walk in off the streets and get one as long as you had your medical form with you.

The wife and I started with wedding cars in 2000. We didn't need a license until 2001 when we bought our first stretched limo. Never worked for anyone else.
