Has anybody got the 8 passenger seats in a Hackney, I think it's available in Mercedes M8. If you have are you licenced for the 8 passenger seats or only for 7 passenger seats. Our council will only licence them in the Hackneys for 7 seats because apparently the front passenger seat is too close to the driver for the passenger to sit in it :?

Is there a set dimension for the separation?

toots if you have ever looked at one the front seat is a bench seat but because of the prop shaft there is nowhere for a passenger to put their feet . My previous vehicle was a Vito but the front wheel drive version in that there was a reasonable bit of leg room. it was very awkward though with 2 largish customers in the front it was very difficult to change gears and you were driving squashed over to your side I.E. in a very uncomfortable and compromised position. My current vehicle the VW has a little more room but there is an issue with sitting 2 in the front if they are of a larger size !

It is therefore understandable if some councils think it is a safety issue (or even a personal space issue)

We have the Renault/Vauxhall/Nissan trio, the M8 and now the transit all plated for eight here in Chester. None of them are fit to carry 8 in my opinion.

In a speech for the National Taxi Association Conference on 27 October 2010, Norman Baker,
Minister for Local and Regional Transport said, 'And, in this regard, about licensing authorities
local policies which
require taxi owners with seven or eight seater vehicles to remove one or two of the seats.
There is no real justification for this - all it does is to restrict your ability to provide the sort of
service which you have identified and which you want to provide.'

did he mention LA's who refuse to plate certain vehicles because the rear row access is via a tipping seat?

No they haven't done that or if they have they haven't made it public. Also the same vehicle can be used for private hire with 8 seats and they haven't said which of the 8 seats isn't insured. Stupid IMO but there you go,
