Post subject:  General guidance needed...

Okay I know the last time I posted on here I [edited by admin] a hell of a lot of you off for which I apologise profusely due to the fact a lot of you were throwing your toys out the pram because I was a voluntary driver, well I still am but am earning a significant amount less as I took a 2 year leave and it's quite cliquey, during the last month or 6 weeks in fact I've probably earned £60 tops. This isn't a hint for another round of abuse I'm looking for general guidance from taxi drivers as I've made a decision regarding my employment.

Basically I've been with the Jobcentre for a while (Lincolnshire is crap for work) and yes they are aware that I drive for a voluntary car service, I've been given the go ahead from the JC to get my taxi license, they've stated that they will pay for my HCL so I can start work doing something I actually want to do as in the past it's been financially unviable to do my license. But my problem is I have 2 options basically I can work in Boston as I have a guaranteed job with one company, will be given a car 5 years old or less but is a smaller town and isn't as busy I wouldn't of thought. Or I can get my license in Lincoln and get a significantly less specced vehicle for another company, but in a bigger, busier city.

Baring in mind I'll be doing it full time on a 3 month trial. In the honest opinion of drivers what's better bigger place with a car that's basically just been held together in the hope it'll pass another test or smaller town where it's not as busy but with a newer nicer car. If any actual drivers from these areas can tell me what sort of income there is then I'd be very grateful.

And if those who I upset before post on here just remember we're all human and we're all out to make a crust. Apologies to you all if I offended you the last time.

Voluntary drivers really shouldn't be earning anything.

Big city doesn't always mean big bucks.

Small companies don't always mean small bucks.

I suspect you will earn from both, but I doubt you will earn fortunes from either.

Go with what you think.

The person on here to ask is Jimbob as he is a Lincoln driver why not pm him and he can give you the low down on Lincoln as for Boston well it's not close enough to Peterborough to be flooded out with Peterborough based drivers but as I understand it Boston has no shortage of drivers and vehicles.

Where do you live ?

I live in Coningsby, a small village that is 23 miles from Lincoln, 14 miles from Boston, 8 miles from Horncastle, 27 miles from Skeg etc etc etc...I did contemplate setting up business here as we only have one taxi company here there's a few working there that don't do long distance work and the driver that does do long journeys stops at 9pm, in fact they all do

Is the RAF base still open? If so whore yourself around the base offering your services.

Yeh the base is still very much operational, it's actually a Quick Reaction Alert base and they regularly hunt Bears as for the base though the RAF folk around here all have spunky new motors instead of using taxis and such.

RAF and army bases always generate some work although it can often be a feast or famine situation but with the nearest railheads being Boston or Lincoln I would have thought there was some good work and Tattershall and Coningsby are descent sized villages so there is probably a bit of Work there to and from Lincoln or Boston especially if you are prepared to do late nights at the weekend

Our town/base is a lot smaller than the one actually nearest me, but that has way too many hacks and even more PH, the requirements for PH (age, etc) are a lot more lax so they have 02 plate Mondeos when we have to have 12 plates for a 1st grant, (hack or PH), they have 40 WAV hacks on the rank, we dont.....

our flag is higher than theirs too

The question is simple as is the answer. Does the numbers work. I'll give it to you on a plate. Now, you don't need to think - just do this and come back with advice for others in your predicament.

Answer: Go to Lincoln and get your licence there. The cost of entry is lower there as the age of the car is not a problem. Get a £200 mondeo of eBay. Plate it and get on the road. You will have all that money back in a week.

As for the rest of the investment money. Well, you ain't forking it so it's not really considered. Lincoln drivers are in so much demand. Work evenings 15:00-01:00 Monday to Saturday.

It is not about the car or the city you work in. It's about the income. That's all that matters. Drive a new car in Boston making pennies, or drive a 20 yr old one in Lincoln taking home £500 a week? You decide.

And if you need a guaranteed job in Lincoln. Hit me!
