Post subject:  Busy or Quiet times... Should I stay or should I go?
Having just started out as a PH last week I'm a bit confused as to how much work there is out there.

I was told that because last week was the Islamic Holy week that there would be a lot of work out there, I've also been led to believe (from other sources) that the weeks coming upto and including Christmas are probably the busiest times of the year for the PH.

Last Tuesday I did 12 hours from the time I got in my car until then end which is when I went home, 6am - 6pm, I'm not able to work nights as I'm having to share a car with someone else. For my efforts last week I took home only £29, to be honest with you'd I'd have probably got more money flipping burgers at McDonalds. Thursday was the best day with a whopping £80 although when you add up what I took for the whole week it doesn't even cover my rent/fuel etc.

My Operator has been in business for about 18 months + (taxi driver for 30 years) but I don't really think he has his house in order with regards to advertising the business hence the lack of work.

I have a friend that used to work for Solihull Council and is telling me that on his first day he worked 17 hours and took home £240 and many more decent takings after that.

Has anyone come across this sort of thing before, it seems to me that the operator has only done enough to keep it ticking over for the drivers but of course is happy enough to take the rent from us every week and not actually spending money on promoting the business for the benefit of everyone else.

Would I be better off somewhere else or has the work really dried up for this time of year?

i think you need to go to a busier office.

sure you'll pay more in rent, but that will be offset against higher earnings.

You should be taking at least £10 per hour so a twelve hour shift should be £120 min. If you do look for a new op maybe you could try and find one with some nice contract work, this way you will have reg income if you get a school or such like.

You either need to find a new operator, or go and get licensed in another area that has proper earning potential.

But you have just found out the hard way about rule number one, never believe what an operator says you can earn. :^o

have u tried for a cab license?
at least if u drive a cab then if theres no radio work u can work the streets.

It can take a while to build up a PH office, and obviously some never do.

Anyone can start an office, and anyone can take on cars, but that's not to say there's enough work for them.

The more established offices are probably worth a try. If there aren't any then I would have a rethink.
