Post subject:  driver has had a stroke.

Anyone any idea of the rules regarding drivers having a stroke and taxi driving?
A driver here has had a stroke this week and he has been told that he can't drive for a month. Apparently he does not have to inform the DVLA unless he still has any problems after 1 month. He has been told by the Licensing department that he has to have a medical before he can continue to drive a taxi.
What are the procedures in other areas?

You can be fined up to £1,000 if you don’t tell DVLA about a medical condition that affects your driving. You may be prosecuted if you’re involved in an accident as a result.

Car or motorcycle licence
You only need to tell DVLA if you’re still having problems 1 month after the stroke.

Download the leaflet ‘Car or motorcycle drivers who have had a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA)’ to find out if you need to tell DVLA about your stroke.

We have read the leaflets.
I was just interested in what happens in other areas regarding a medical after a stroke. The driver is not objecting to taking a medical.

The DVLA allow a lot of people to drive that councils don't.

The council are covering their bums by ensuring he passes a medical before he gets back to hire and reward work.

I wish him well.

No 2 strokes are the same, some are very light, some life threatening and only a specialist can be certain of the effects

my dad had a bad one at 85, in fact he had 2 mini-strokes on separate occasions and had been driving, the last one ended his driving

He has already recovered. It can't have been too serious on this occasion. He has to wait 4 weeks just to be certain. He should be OK to pass the medical.
