Post subject:  Road resurfacing
yesterday we had a road closed in town so that they could resurface a 100 metre stretch today I drove down it to find all they did was scrape the top off !

20 years ago i remember a tarmac gang doing a 500 metre stretch of road in the town overnight on a saturday sunday including line painting they started about 8 pm and were finished before 6 am on the sunday

Why does it now seem to take 10 times as long to do a tarmac job as it used to 20 to 30 years ago ?

I've been asking the same just lately, round here we've had the same problem as you, a road has been closed for 5 days to do a 200 meter stretch of road :roll: :roll:

I think the resurfacing companies are taking the councils pants down with regards to time and the amount of work done.

To skim a 500 meter stretch of doesn't take al night.

10 Years ago they'ed resurface one lane and keep the other open with a Lollypop man and sign, Now it's close the road for 5 days and send everyone on a 10 mile detour....in the interest of Elf n Safety of course.

Edinburgh has it running brilliantly, you couldn't get better ,well managed roadworks,perfectly synced lights especially around the centre, lovely smooth roads too I hardly spend a penny on suspension repairs :---)

today, out of the blue, a set of 4 way traffic lights appeared so a trench could be dug across 1 lane, total traffic chaos and all left after the team left at about 4pm, trench open, a lane closed off, lights in place

20 years ago there would have been 2 stop/go boards and once dug a steel plate would have been left across the trench...

What ever happened to road plates? Round here on Thursday they dug a hole on a pavement and installed three way lights because they'd dug the hole on a junction, no danger to traffic because the hole was on the pavement. :roll: :roll: :roll:

absolute chaos today, not just having to re-route round town but also convince passengers they might like to consider a different dropoff point

On tuesday we had one of the busiest roads in the town centre closed for resurfacing they stripped the road and left it blockaded yesterday no sign of workmen and road left completely closed !!!!! :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil:

I've had to use the top of the M25 at night recently, several nights on the trot, and the lane blockades there are ridiculous. 5 miles of 50 variable speed limits before the road works, then 2 miles of cones, and nothing being done. Or 5 miles of 50>40>2 lanes blocked signed and no sign of ANY lanes being blocked! The Highways Agency or whatever they're called this week really need to be taken to task over the wrong and misleading signing. No wonder drivers ignore the signs.

yep that sounds about right for the M25
