| Post subject: | Pick Up/Drop Off On Bus Stop |
Is it legal for a taxi to pick up and drop off on a bus stop ? On doing this I have on occasion found that some bus drivers who suddenly appear behind me (the bus stop was clear when I pulled into it) get very angry, as if I had no right to be there. However in many cases it is necessary for the passenger, so as to drop them off close to where they require, and not a hundred yards down the road. Also you sometimes get flagged down by someone at a bus stop. I have checked in the Highway Code but can't find any specifics on this, so I would appreciate any knowledgable input, thanks. |

A bus stop is what it is, no vehicle is allowed to stop in one except an emergency vehicle, best stop just before or after, that pis-ses bus drivers off as well. http://www.justanswer.com/uk-law/3g2io- ... -pick.html |

Yes its a Hackney Cab. Thank you for the link. I see the solicitor says :- "Come what may though, you can stop to drop off and collect passengers. There has been case on the point of how long and the answer is really indistinct. It merely says 'as long as reasonable'. But are bus drivers reasonable ? I think not, at least certainly in some cases. There is one short one-way street in my town center (its Whitehall St, Dundee) which has bus stops ALL the way along it and several restaurants. You cannot drop off a passenger at one of these popular restaurants WITHOUT stopping on a bus stop, unless greatly inconveniencing the passenger. However the irate attitude of some bus drivers has got me worried of receiving a complaint. Parking on the other side of the street means passengers get out in middle of road - that's pretty unprofessional taxi driving in my opinion, and I won't do it. So the only other option would be to drop them off in the next street. OR for bus drivers to take a more reasonable attitude towards this. What gets me is they will honk their horn angrily for the sake of a 20 second wait on somebody getting out - is this reasonable? |

Our Council used to tell us that we could pick up as long as we weren't inside the yellow box/ |

A Hackney Carriage is allowed to drop off or pick up in a bus stop,private hire vehicles cannot stop in a bus stop ever. |

Bus stops as far as I have ascertained are treated the same as a taxi rank only Authorised vehicles may stop there i.e for a bus stop buses for a taxi rank hackney carriages but emergency vehicles attending a call out can park there whilst attending the emergency I'm sure we've all done it when dropping passengers off for that bus stop but technically we can be prosecuted for so doing although that would be highly unlikely given the attitude of most police forces to minor motoring offences |

It depends on the colour of the lines, and the local traffic order. But in the main taxis and PHVs are allowed to pick up and drop off in bus stops. The product may be alive but we are technically unloaded and loading goods. |

Our pedestrian zone is open from 16.00 until 10.00 for the loading and unloading of goods but taxis and private hire vehicles are not permitted to pick up or drop off in the zone. private vehicles are not permitted to load or unload goods within the zone. Commercial vehicles only. Mind you, that is not what the traffic order states. |

I once got a ticket for dropping off at a bus stop. I successfully appealed it on the grounds that as a licensed taxi driver I was allowed to do it. |

it depends on council regulations grandad, not bus stops obviously but never been called or fined for pickin up or droppin off on a bus stop, further on we've two private ranks outside asda and sainsburys where ph drivers can pick up punters like hackneys (private ground council regulation) and ph drivers can drive and pick up/drop off on pedestrian zone... |

A Taxi (but not a PH) can stop on a Bus Stop to load or unload only. The Regulation is "Statutory Instrument 3113 of 2002, Regulation 29, Schedule 19, Bus Stand Clearways and Box Junctions, Para 4(d)." So it is National Law and can't be trumped by the LA' The exact quote then: (d) A taxi which is stationary only for so long as may be reasonably necessary for a passenger to board or alight and to load or unload any luggage of the passenger; I often use Bus Stops - particularly the ones with the raised kerb (Bus Boarders) for loading or unloading my Wheelchair Passengers - but after a Traffic Cop gave me grief (and a Ticket which got cancelled), I also keep a copy of Schedule 19 in my Cab, twice since ordinary Coppers have radioed in to check the veracity.
