No wife, No kids, just sunburn and my pit overalls on it Quote: The 1976 United Kingdom heat wave led to the hottest summer average temperature in the UK since records began. At the same time, the country suffered a severe drought. It was one of the driest, sunniest and warmest summers (June/July/August) in the 20th century, although 1995 is now regarded as the driest. Only a few places registered more than half their average summer rainfall. In the CET record, it was the warmest summer in that series. It was the warmest summer in the Aberdeen area since at least 1864. It was the driest summer since 1868 in Glasgow.

I used to run a mobile disco in those days, doing an outdoor gig it was so hot the records melted and distorted as soon as I put them on the turntable! then one of the speakers overheated and seized up which in turn blew the power amp, so we had a quiet party! |

Spent that summer working night shift in a frozen pea factory. Worked the tenderometer and graded the incoming trucks of peas from Birds Eye's Best through Fine Fare and Liptons to bowling balls and then weapons of mass destruction. Spent every night in shorts and a tea shirt and every day when I got up just the same. Old enough to work nights but not old enough to blow it down the pub so bought myself a tidy camera when the summer finally ended. |

What I remember about 1976, apart from it being hot, was the millions and millions of ladybirds. And how good it was being a kid near the seaside. |
