from all accounts the gorilla was trying to help and protect the child so why couldn't they use a tranquiliser dart instead ?

The reason that a tranquillise dart could not be used was explained by someone from the zoo. Firstly the pictures show the Gorilla dragging the child through the water on more than one occasion. The use of a dart would take several minutes to take effect and the behaviour of the gorilla during that time would have been unpredictable.
Without knowing the full history of the gorillas behaviour over the years it is not easy for some of us to accept that this was the safest course of action to ensure the safety of the child. I don't think they would have shot the gorilla if they were certain of a safe outcome by any other means.
Many people are quick to condemn the mother for he lack of supervision of the child, myself, I will reserve judgement until there has been a proper investigation carried out.

well lets enlighten you then, the kids father has a criminal record as long as your arm for drug offences, the mother also ( not as long though ) so the kid is on a hiding to nothing for his start in life, probably be better off letting the fooking gorillas bringing the kid up tbf, they are just junkies

What kind of security is in place at the zoo if a 4 year old is able to gain access to the gorilla enclosure. I will wait until the full investigation has been carried out before laying blame.

But they used a bullet while the gorilla was close to the child? It's a travesty, the gorilla didn't deserve to be killed like that.

What would you have done if it had been your call?

I think the right decision was made, maybe the gorilla would have been protective but who was going in to get the child, a tranq shot often antagonises the animal hit....

if it had been my child id agree with the decision and accept the flak for the child getting dropped into the enclosure

5hit happens

Dart first then, if the Gorilla was showing signs that it was going to harm the boy then let loose with a bullet. The gorilla wasn't showing any signs at all, it was protecting the boy.

The animals reaction to the dart would be instant, the kiddy would be ripped apart....

sad decision, but the right 1

How do people know? Some darts can sedate in under a minute.

tbh that's what i thought , 2 or more guns aimed & ready, first one tranq, if it kicked off then the bullets, if it got the tranq it would have probably got startled & ran off anyway, its a shame, anyway done now, big proud 17 year old gorilla killed because of neglectful parents eusasmiles.zip
