Post subject:  Little bit of help required please

As you all know I am/was a voluntary driver (queue the throwing of tomatoes/faeces/eggs in my general direction) and have been given the opportunity to start up taxi driving as I was last year. My problem was I sat myself down and looked at it and everything seemed too good to be true and I persuaded myself out of the jon before I'd even started. The more I sit and look at it from different angles the more I think to myself that yes it may be a pitiful existence if you're not willing to put the hours in but if you're willing to put the time and effort in then maybe just maybe it could be the job for me. So I've decided that after all the debating I WANT TO GO FOR IT!

The question is employment, I can get the funding for my license that's a given it's a guaranteed certainty. The problem is that I need to know of companies in Lincoln (that's my preferred location for work) that will offer a guaranteed job if I can get the funding. I need a company that is willing to put down on letterheaded paper that they will offer me a job if I get the funding for my taxi license. Preferably a company with its own fleet of cars as I'd like to rent a cab so that I'm not having to share (I don't like sharing cars, it's my pet peeve to get into a car only to find someone has left the mirror in their preferred position - I can never get it quite right once moved!) I have messaged Jimbo and TheCrab as they're both Lincoln drivers but haven't had a response yet. Also it would be preferable that it's Hackney plated as I'd like to be able to pick up hailers too. Any advice would be gratefully received and you may direct your hatred towards me for being a voluntary driver but I'm wanting to be one of you so let's all play nicely :)

I suppose the easiest way would be to make contact directly with all the local company's and ask what they can offer.

licensing depts will drive you insane

well you will keep winding them up

Seriously though I would recommend going to lincoln and talking to a few drivers and see what they "claim" to earn it won't tell you what you can expect but it will give you an idea if they are struggling or making a living

Why can't you get a license and give it a go?

In other words do both for a while and see what happens.

And we don't hate voluntary drivers, we just hate the laws that allow abuses to happen.

it is a human condition, the grass is always greener, etc....

between officious licensing dept's, robbing bases and ever increasing costs to meet vehicle requirements and insurance Its hard to justify starting up now

When I first started voluntary driving I was in Skeg I'm now in Coningsby which is only 30 miles down the road but the place I'm with are EXTREMELY cliquey, if your face don't fit they begrudge giving you the decent work unless the client in question is on "The List" - es they have a list of passengers that are awkward, arsey, generally nasty etc...I get all of these though they normally find me to be delightful and as such they are normally good for me and do ask for my private number so they can bypass "the miserable t*ats in the office" which I do give them and make sure that future jobs are booked in with the office.

Most of my workload are the ones the other drivers don't like dealing with such as minors which I have no problem with carrying them as I have a recorder in my car anyway for insurance purposes I know it's only a front and rear facing dashcam but it's a bloody good deterrent!

But as for my office my work usually goes to the drivers in Horncastle and the surrounding areas (pretty sure this is bordering profiteering!) and it's not unusual for me to get one job worth £4 every 2 months and I'm being serious with that! I did get one decent job yesterday and I've got another tomorrow but £75 takings in 3 months...Something wrong there! I did used to work from my dad's in Louth and had the night shift once or twice a month which was 4pm until 10am the next morning which was fairly good takings for a night.

As for cabbies in Lincoln I did used to speak to a bloke called Phill Coupland who Jimbo probably knows and he reckoned if you put the hours in you can walk out with £400-£500 a week after rent in Lincoln but to be honest I just don't know who to believe about it, it always seems too good to be true and most of the cabbies I've spoken to in Skeg and Boston are more than willing to take me on usually followed by "You can buy my cab off in bits and bobs just work it off, it's good money but I fancy a change of job" so you automatically think "[edited by admin] pay, they want out!"
