As per title. I'm just on my 4th week now doing private hire and faced this unpleasant surprise last night (edited by admin = urinary incontinence brought on by excessive consumption of alchohol). I was shocked that a human being would do this, as opposed to a demented monkey. might try the dayshift, and see what's that's like. other "undesirables" picked up included druggies going on a drug run or clearly high on some kind of uppers (stoners are no problem), morbidly obese people who complain I'm driving too slowly over bumps or refusing to mount the kerb when parking (they damage the suspension right?), more than 1 drunk young man (by themselves they're ok, with another one or more they start "showing off" in the car and being completely unfunny. |

Why do you pick up people who are excessively drunk? |

They say "never judge a book by its cover", unfortunately in the taxi trade that only applies to books as per quote. Imo if the passenger does not look right then 97.5% of the time you will be right. I thought after running pubs and clubs for 26 years that I knew all about people - I did not. In taxiing you will meet the lowest of the low, hopefully you will learn as you go along as to how to profile them before they get into your cab/car - do not take a fare out of desperation, unfortunately there will be times like that. Treat every over the top noise/action with caution. One incident back a few years ago (I ran an E7) happened when a couple got in and were going to quite a salubrious part of Cardiff ( no worries there....apparently). The woman started to play music on her mobile louder than the norm, as such I said nothing and allowed it to continue, putting it down to bad manners and the fact that they would be out in 10 mins. After they had got out, I noticed that the male had wretched bile over the back of the cab, and had said nothing, ( the music had been to cover up him making a noise). They stupidly had stopped outside of their home and by now had disappeared inside with no chance of them coming back out. In this case it took probably 10 minutes of my time to clean the mess left - in their case, removing a pot of white gloss from their front doorstep/drive will have taken a lot longer. You will meet a lot of nice people, however just like the boy scouts...........be prepared for the unexpected i.e any shuffling/moving around or over the top noise from the back, then be aware. Quote: Why do you pick up people who are excessively drunk? Unfortunately the above is not always obvious. I have had them at my window, apparently as right as rain - a minute or two later into the drive.....Oh bugger. |

Actually I'd say the job is half old ladies and half drunks and I get much more grief from the old ladies. I think as drivers we have different tolarance levels and would define what is "excessively drunk" differently In my case if they can walk unaided and clearly state their destination they get in. In 11 years I have had two pukers and maybe half a dozen runners not all of whom were drunk. |

Hell no, you are still self employed and in most areas drivers are in short supply whilst cab firms are ten a penny. Grow some balls Never ever forget, they don't pay you, YOU pay them. |

I tell my drivers that if they think a passenger is to drunk, aggressive, smelly etc. They are within their rights to refuse the fare. |

Rule no 1. If you don't like the look/state of the punter, or general feel of the job, don't do it. Rule no 2. If you adhere to rule no 1, there will always be another job coming along at sometime. |
