Taxi Driver Online

Can anyone advise me on this one, Can all Private Hire Vehicles from any region use Newcastle City Bus lanes, I found the following stating:

Only buses; taxis;motorcycles; pedal cyclists; private hire vehicles or vehicles
which have been authorised in writing by Newcastle City Council
can use all bus lanes and bus only streets during their hours of operation.

that came from Necastle City Councils own website under document :

So unless I'm thick as mince as I might well be then I reckon My Scottish Private Hire Plated Vehicle can quite legally use all bus lanes and Bus streets in Newcastle upon Tyne.

It makes no mention of having to specifically be a NCC Taxi/PH plate.

can Any of you guys confirm I'm right before i get a fine for trying please..

Does'nt matter what it says in some .pdf on a council website, what does the LAW say ?
Could be used as a defence against a ticket in an appeal, but unless the traffic order, road markings and signs are all correct and say it's ok then , no. Depends on how rigourously they're enforced.

Well as the Byelaws on Bus Lanes and bus only streets were set by Newcastle city council and the PDF release was from the official and only Newcastle city council website then I guess the law just reflects the bylaws on bus lane use that NCC put in place...

It is correct information,take no notice of the wording after private hire vehicle,what it is saying is that any other vehicle must have it in writing from the Council to use the restricted bus lanes.

I am not trying to turn this into an English lesson but those semicolons mean something.

There is no semi colon after Private Hire vehicles, as such I would interpret that to mean that they fall in with all other traffic and need authorisation.

The only reason the Semi colon is there after Private hire vehicle is because the word "or" is immediately after it, you can't have a semi colon in such an instance.

Besides, It would not ,ake much sensense to read "private hire vehicles or vehicles which have been authorised in writing by Newcastle City Council can use all bus lanes and bus only streets during their hours of operation" that would not make ant sense at all....only "or vehicles which have been authorised in writing by Newcastle City Council can use all bus lanes and bus only streets during their hours of operation" would make sense.

Anyway, they should not be using semi colons at all..it should be puntuated by using Commas...eg, Taxi, Buses etc with exception of the last subject in the chain of acceptable vehicles before the word "Or"..

It is my interpretation, so you may very well be right.

Lets look at it another way.

If they had wanted PH to be incorporated into usage of the lane, then they could have put the semicolon immediately after PH as they did the others! All they then had to say was "All other vehicles need authorisation", this does away with all ambiguity.

There was no punctuation immediately after PH. They were part of a sentence with no punctuation that incorporated everyday vehicles.

I would in many respects read the sentence in this manner (bearing in mind the question - Who can use the Bus lane). Only buses; taxis;motorcycles; pedal cyclists; ( I would read the following separately)............. private hire vehicles or vehicles which have been authorised in writing by Newcastle City Council can use all bus lanes and bus only streets during their hours of operation.

ph cant use them, only hacks

Iv'e phoned NCC and PH and Hacks can both use them but not all of them...sadly the one I want to use is a Bus only lane..no Hacks or PH allowed...but Lycra Clad Cyclists can..feck
