Hi
Any ideas on where to get data on dead mileage for hackney carriages? Would be greatly appreciated.

Reset your meter and your odometer for each shift. Most meters give you the live mileage, but if yours doesn't, then the amount earned will reflect your live mileage which you then subtract from your total mileage on the odometer. Simples.

If you're purely HC and don't have a radio then surely the dead mileage is the return to the rank unless you get a hail, but in these parts those are rare

Our meters show paid miles, look on your mileage for the day, if you've done 250 miles and got 150 paid miles on your meter you don't need me to tell you the amount of dead miles you've done.

Depending on how rural your area is. I use a 60/40 spli when working out costs. 60%loaded and 40% empty.

The Brighton fares formula is based on 60% paid 40% dead.

In my experience as a rural operator the split was about 60/40. No doubt HMRC will come up with the right answer based on the averages for other drivers in the same area.
