It's got to be costing him £200+ per week. He'll be better of renting without any of the hassle.
Buying used to get you 40% write down for tax in year 1(then 3 x 20% in subsequent years) but not now
He could have got the VAT back off it by registering (for a year)
renting (if you mean NOT off a base) includes VAT but is 100% tax deductable weekly (if you like), always assuming you can find anywhere to rent one from (or lease)
renting off a base (£320/week here) will cost him as much or more with no end in sight but without servicing/insurance/repairs/plates, etc
my last car was a cash purchase £4000, lasted 18months cost me £1000 in services/tyres and took £4000 in its last month but only did 40mpg (Chevrolet Epica), bought with a loan at £150/month
this one was new, total purchase £20K, ive paid half (VATman gave me £3K) I so can chuck it back FOC, does 60mpg, my school run will go up to £582 a week after Easter. car costs me £300/month. The better mpg almost pays the extra outgoings
I went hackney plated 2 years ago simply because we intended moving out of my LA, then didnt, I havent worked the ranks this year, id happily go back to PH.........and be ready to UBER-up if they come close
