Post subject:  HGV to Hackney Carriage, should I do it?

I'm sure it's been asked a thousand times before but thought I would ask anyway with my specific details.

At the minute I'm a class 1 tramper in Norwich. I start early hours Saturday morning and get back home Tuesday night. While away I do three 15 hour days then a 12 on Tuesday. For that I usually take home about £550. Company I work for treat you fairly well and the works not particularly difficult so I have a fairly stress free life and as far as jobs go I've had worse. It is only four days a week but it takes in the whole weekend. If I changed to Monday to Friday I would earn less. If you know a lorry driver I'm sure you have the opinion that we're all moaning c***s which is broadly true and we nearly always think everyone else has an easy life compared to us kings of the road  but I'm fully aware to make a decent living as a cabbie you've got to put in the work.

The reason I'm looking at a change is because it's not a particularly health lifestyle and I'm away from the family over half the week. At the minute my two kids are Pre school age so it's quite nice having time off in the week to do things when it's quiet. Their both starting at school this September so from then I feel like I'm going to hardly see them so that's why I'm looking at other options.

Any opinions would be great so let me have em. I would be looking at buying a new black cab using equity from our house. Do you think money wise I can hit roughly the same take home working day Saturday afternoon through to Sunday morning and three days during the week?

Taxiing and PH is fast becoming a mugs game, I'll put money on it that less than 2.5% of the folk in here who drive for themselves will ever take home an average of more than £550 per week...many of us will be working for below the minimum wage....and thats working anti social hours as well and often dealing with Smackheads and P1ss heads at night...stressful or what? healthy lifestyle!..no way.

Save yer money, find a Job stacking shelves somewhere, you'll rue the day you took to Taxiing.

Cheers Bloodnock, that's pretty much what most HGV drivers think about this job nowadays.

Any other opinions out there?

If you look further on down to the topic "Gen Info"by SteSuv, the info should assist. Just to reiterate; So much will depend on the area/City you are from. If you live in an affluent/busy part of the country - you can still make decent money. Having said that, to make decent money, you will in most cases be working Friday and Saturday nights.

It depends a lot on where you are going to work but if you assume similar hours to what you are working but approximately HALF the wage that would be a realistic estimate

You'll never bag £550 a week in this game mate.

That's a bit gutting, happy to work hard but sounds like it's just not possible. Thanks for taking the time out to reply to me though.

What part of the country are you from - it matters massively re earnings.

Cheers Ven2112, had seen a few of your posts and noticed you were ex HGV so I was hoping you would give me your opinion.

I'm still looking into it all, do bigger company's with loads of drivers on their books not get the school work?

Yes (in fact in some areas ONLY companys get school runds cos the county make it almost impossible for owner drivers) the trouble is many "companies" take rent off you for the pda/radio then cream 10-20% off the accounts you do for them, and some pay you 30 days from EOM invoice...............
