Had a job about 8 years ago, an old girl who had her dog in quarantine in Colchester.

She went three times a week for nearly 4 months.

Cost her about £600 a week.

Our youngest dog, Cody, is having his left hip replaced at a cost of £5500 including the pr-op assessments and post-op check ups. He had his right hip replaced 2 years ago. Insurance has a maximum payout per year of £4000.

I must admit we have no insurance, its been just too expensive and with the excess at £70 and vets charging just to write out claims i couldnt justify it with having 3 dogs and 2 cats.

having said that, im not a believer in subjecting a dog/cat to major surgery or chemo, they dont understand

I know what you mean and we would never subject any of our pets to chemo again ( been there with a black lab of ours years ago, it was the wrong decision but made for the right reasons ) If Cody was an older dog say 8 or 9 we would go down the route of pain relief and reduced exercise. But, since he's only just 4years old and we saw what a difference the first operation made to his quality of life, we're willing to put him through it again. He's now on painkillers everyday until the operation, after the last op he didn't need any pain relief after 4 weeks.

That's a last resort option for him. The problem is he weighs 55kg ( they're both dogue de Bordeaux/ Rottweiler crosses ) and that option isn't suitable for such a big dog. The vet that's doing it is a one of the top vets in the uk, even the "Supervet" uses a type of elbow joint invented by him and a Colleague at Liverpool university small animal hospital (Leahurst)
