There is only one wheelchair hacvkney in our area. The driver never secures the wheelchair and leaves it facing sideways with the wheelchair brake on. He charges whatever he likes, quite often double what the metered fare would be. He has been reported by other drivers who have seen him loading and unloading and in one case when one of the drivers had to use his services to take her and her son, who was in a wheelchair due to a hip injury, home, he charged £25.00 instead of the metered fare of £12.00. All reported to the Council and he still has his license.

As a Councillor you can raise this under members inquiry,ie. The number of occasions the Council has received reports of overcharging by a TAXI(hackney carriage) and the specific action taken in each individual case.

No I can't. As a Councillor who runs a taxi company I have to disclose a financial interest in anything to do with taxis and because of this I can't even raise issues. It is a stupid rule in some ways but it is still a rule.

Ask another Councillor to raise it,it is only a information request which any Councillor has the right to know if an illegal act has taken place on a regular basis and what steps the Council is taking to ensure they are stopped.

when I used to do wheelchair work i charged standard fare but just couldn't compete with volunteer drivers who have the vehicles bought for them and their costs covered. So swapped to a conventional 8 seater which is proving far more popular with non wheelchair passengers due it's all forward facing seats.

many of the jobs were short hops from Nursing home to hospitals or dentists £3 fare which took 20 minutes to complete due to the loading unloading taking 5 or 6 minutes at each end loading and strapping in ! Then there were the electric wheelchairs which were far too heavy to maneuver up the ramp and get into a position where i could strap them in that's if they weren't too low slung that they got stuck on the ramps. And the worst of all the 6 wheelers that simply could not be pushed up because they grounded at the top of the ramps.

I think wheelchair access is far better provided by specialist tail lift vehicles such as the council run minibuses subsidised out of the rates we pay but wait of course they aren't tail lift equipped and I have never seen them carry a wheelchair passenger but they have done so allegedly
