Picture this, Saturday night everythings flat out [remember this bit]

tons of people on the ranks

Hack pulls up [WA type]

woman opens door and says, "do we have to get in this one"

The drivers says, "you can get in the one behind" as the woman slams the door, and the taxi driver is still answering the question, continued, "if you don't want to get into this one"

with that he loaded up with some punter and off he went

A few weeks later he is summond by the Council, about this refusing a wheelchair, don't know anything about it he said.

6 months later after the Council have carried out investigations, he is summond back to face the Enforcement officer

The Council recieved a letter of complaint that he refused a wheelchair, we investigated and hold a letter of complaint, they read the riot act complete with all the taxi laws and the punishment which can be given in a case like this.

That he refused to pick up a person in a wheelchair, the person in question took your plate number, badge number, vehicle registration and type of vehicle

The driver told the Enforcement officer, that that was untrue and he never saw a wheelchair.
The letter went on how the wheelchair occupant was disable, blind and could not walk

That you the driver got out of his cab for a few minutes came round the otherside of the vehicle and had 10 minutes conversation on reasons why he couldn't carry the wheelchair [remember Saturday night, flat out], then drove off at speed.

The letter also went on about that the wheelchair occupant usually hides away from the rank because so many cabs will not pick her up

The driver asked, so the lady was blind, so how did she note all the details of the cab, good question, we will all be asking ourselves this one

The driver was informed that on this occassion because of lack of further evidence, no further matter will be taken, but the letter will be held to the driver's file for 5 years

As the driver was leaving the Council, the Enforcement officer said he was going to bring the matter up with the next local taxi assocciation meeting, the driver said, that he will be attending the meeting with his solicitor if they want to go down that road

if any of you are pulled and asked to going to the Council re a taxi offence, you do not have to go, they can't arrest you, if you wish to go, you can take someone in with you who may speak on your behalf

basicly this is some kinda taxi licencing kangaroo court system which holds you guilty even from words of members of the public, it stinks, its wrong

Unless they give you all the details of the person making the accusations, which in most times they wont, then say and do diddly squat.

If the council doesn't like it, then tough, if it was an internal council issue then they could only take the disciplinary route if the accused was made aware of the accuser.

You are correct, Stinky Pete, they cannot arrest you. But non attendance will guarantee you will be suspended, until you do attend, I would have thought?

Same in Fife but drivers who have been caught speeding are treated worst - nothing more than a kangaroo court where you are in a dock like a criminal. If you apply at your renewal for the 3yr hackney drivers badge, you appear in front of like a judge and jury senario and at best will recieve a years licence although you have forked out for the full 3yr badge even though the offence could have been 2 and a half years previously!!! Mind you i have no sympathy for one of our local drivers who was recently clocked at 57 in a 30, mid afternoon, in one of the most notoriuos roads round here for mobile camers vans
