Hello all , advice please ;

So 25 years later had enough of bosses , routines and being told what to do I boldly go back to what I was doing as a youngster !!

Car wise I’ve been spoilt with a company one so going used again is new

I have 9 k but good lord there’s so much choice

Saw a lovely 9k avensis 50k Miles a real beauty
But then I’m looking at 5500 to 7 k£ for great spec insignia , puegeot 508,
Passat with 100k on

Yes all day long folk will say 100k is nothing for a diesel
First post and I expect this isn’t first time it’s been asked on here

Do drivers what’s your thoughts and advice

100k isnt lots for a diesel IF its been serviced, likewise 10k would worry me as its not been used

cant argue with the comment about space in the Skoda, drive one of them now.

what about passat or puegeot and Toyota are these good uns if been serviced reguarly and properly? (see lots of toyota cabbing)

do you recommend an auto box for cabbing?

I wouldn’t be too concerned about mileage as a diesel with 10,000 won’t be much different IMO than one with 50,000.

I love Mondeos, but if you are looking at value for money I think the Skodas are ok.

I can vouch for the Auris hybrid(toyota), you can get brand new for around £90 a week+ 5 years warranty/100k.

BUT..If you live in a hilly area or do lots of motorway miles you'd be better with a modern diesel. Hybrids are best round town in flat areas, on a motorway they'll do 53mpg (which I reckon is still quite good), round town you're looking at 58mpg. Reliability wise we've got a lot coming up to 4 years old and none have had any faults.

I wish you luck coming back in to the trade. You are in for a shock though!

We have a variety of cars in our small fleet abd by far the best one so far it the Toyota Auris Tourer. It is diesel abd apart from servicing and wear and tear it has not skipped a beat in the 4 years that we have had it. Our Dacia Logan is now over 1 year old and still runs great at 28,000 miles and the fuel consumption is still improving but not near the book figures.

And that's not the vehicles problem (unless the 12v battery is on it's way out), that's the drivers problem putting it in accessory mode or turning it off and leaving loads of high-drain equipment powered up !
The 12v battery is ONLY to start the cars computers NOT to power equipment.

I had a Skoda Octavia with the DSG auto box, an excellent car doing well over 50mpg with the 1.8 diesel, cost about £330 a month to lease. I had a Toyota Auris hybrid before that, a much small car and quite nippy, very reliable but expensive on servicing every 12k miles, and less mpg than the Skoda diesel!

If I were still in the business I'd go for another Skoda.

Peugeot don't touch them, Toyotas, there's not enough space in them. I'd go for a Skoda.....don't touch Fords.

Maybe the best plan would be to get a new car on lease, that way you "ought" to be getting something that'll ned very little in the way of repairs except regular servicing, you don't have the huge capital outlay of buying something 2nd hand, and at the end of the lease period you can give it back and get something else new, or pack the job in if it isn't going too well for you.

The Skoda Octavia I had certainly had a cavernous boot, loads of space that I've only otherwise seen in an estate car. As for leasing, at about £300 a month for the Skoda works out at £10 a day. you could easily pay that in HP for a 2nd hand pile of junk in repairs and unreliability.
