Didn't realise this was starting so soon

My niece will be swimming for wales in the 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke she is currently the fastest British girl based on current results and 13th in the World (200m freestyle) but 5 of those ranked above her in the world are Aussies

It's only her second big championship but I have high hopes of her making the final and she is good so who knows if things go her way maybe she will get a medal fingers crossed

Apart from the swimming I shall be routing for England of course in everything else and hopefully we will finish above the Aussies inn the medal table

I wish her well.

Of all the sports to get to the top in swimming, IMO, takes the most dedication.

Indeed. My granddaughter has recently joined the swimming academy aged nine, grandad has apparently volunteered to get up at 0430 twice a week to get her to training sessions.

She swam a bit slow in the heats trying to save her energy for the final and ended up 9th fastest missing out on a final place  but i think if she'd got through she would have needed to smash her PB to get a medal

hopefully the experience did her good

Not from the taxpayer every time,a lot of contestants have to raise funds themselves.

mainly mum and dad plus some sponsorship and some from British swimming plus she swims for Edinburgh university which probably gets her an extra bit of help

well after a slightly disappointing games my niece finally picked up a bronze in the 4 x 100 freestyle swimming the anchor leg in 55 seconds (fastest of the 4 girls) so she isn't coming home empty handed

A lot of it comes from the National Lottery.

Australia wins a 1/3d again as many Gold medals as the UK's combined countries do whilst having only a population of 2/5th that of the UK as a whole.

It just show's how good these Australians athletes and sports men and women are.

Are our Athletes underfunded or under motivated by comparison?

The total number of medals won by the 4 home nations was far more than the total number of medals won by Australia. around half of their medals were won in swimming.
