Dear Operator,

Updated DVSA Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness

As you may be aware, the DVSA have just updated their Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness. I would urge all operators to download a copy and to read through, as there have been a number of changes made; for example, to the guidance on brake testing. The revised guidance is available from:

https://www.safedrivingforlife.info/sites/default/files/guide-to-maintaining-roadworthiness.pdf

Whilst the DVSA’s guidance is aimed at PSV and HGV operators, much of the guidance is relevant to operating any type of vehicle including Private Hire Vehicles and Hackney Carriages. Taxi operators are strongly advised to, as a minimum, read through the parts of the guidance concerning daily walk around checks (including monitoring), contracting out maintenance and the key points of a good maintenance system.

Many thanks,
Senior Transport Co-ordinator
Transport & The Connected County

I'd say they're earning their money if they are at last giving advice to taxi and ph operators about daily walk-round checks and regular maintenance on their cars.

How many times do we read on here on how many vehicles have been stopped because of basic defects that could have been noted on a daily walk-round check?

We have daily walk round check sheets but I don't think the drivers take them seriously enough and just tick the boxes.

But if the daft driver ticks the boxes it means he is accepting responsibility for having done the checks.

Yes, and we had to point this out to a driver last week who hadn't checked the tyres and they were low on tread. We pointed out that if the tyre goes below the minimum it is his license that gets the points.
