The gap between the best and worst has certainly narrowed around these parts. The 17p between Shell diesel in the two Dundee city centre outlets has narrowed to a few pence, because the cheap one has gone up a good bit, while the dear one has come down. The latter certainly not a surprise - suspect they were using the confusion and fast-changing prices to profiteer.

Best value probably the Shell on the main road between Dundee and St Andrews, which was 176.9 the other day. It's on the main road and nothing else nearby, so it's not usually particularly good value. So think it was 3p dearer than Tesco in Dundee, which is about the usual gap in Dundee itself, but the Tesco/Shell gap in Dundee is about 5p just now, if I remember correctly.

But think the Shell between St Andrews and Dundee is the same price (or maybe a penny dearer) than Morrison's in St Andrews (which is why I'm saying it's good value rather than the cheapest).

And apparently the Shell in Leven which was charging 199.9 is down into to 177.9 or something like that. In fact it apparently dropped 12p or so between one morning and afternoon.

Again, that's hardly a surprise, because it was obviously trying it on as well.

But I'm still hanging in with the branded fuel, because as things have settled down the gap with supermarket fuel is similar to what it's usually been. Which again isn't surprising, because the volatile nature of the market for a couple of weeks meant prices were all over the place, but obviously things are settling down a bit, and with any luck prices will decrease over the next few weeks :?

Not all the local petrol stations dropped the 5p at 6.00pm.

But the likes of Asda did.

Not sure that is legal. The duty is added at the point of sale not when they get their delivery.

Doubt there's any legal obligation to pass on the decrease in duty via the pump prices. Or to increase pump prices to reflect any duty increases.

As long as the correct duty is sent to HMRC, that's all that's required in the legal sense. The government will rely on competitive pressures in the market to reduce prices after yesterday, in the longer term at least. But, of course, the market doesn't always work too efficiently even at the best of times.

Quote:
Fuel duty is currently levied at a flat rate of 57.95p per litre for both petrol and diesel, while VAT at 20% is then charged on both the product price and the duty.

So he get fuel duty PLUS 20% lol

The prices are just sad. I still won't give up on driving because of that.
