Hi all, I hope you can all help and give me any suggestions. I’m currently at the application process for a Private Hire Badge in the Rochdale area. To date I’ve done and passed the knowledge test and the CRB is done I’m just waiting on the Medical with my local GP. I’ve actually had to change GP’s as my current one wouldn’t do the medical for me and Rochdale will only accept it being done your GP and not an independent. The whole process has been a nightmare to be honest. Anyway I’m nearly there, my question is for a first time driver who is the best insurer to use and also what car should I be looking at buying. I have no idea on insurance company’s but cars I’m thinking Octavia 1.6tdi or possibly even Jetta or Skoda Rapid with the same engine. Looking at spending 4-5.5k on a car and hopefully pay the insurance monthly for the first year. Any suggestions / advice is greatly appreciated. |

As to a vehicle it is really down to personal taste as long as it meets the council requirements. DO CHECK THOSE OUT FIRST before you buy the vehicle many have made that mistake over the years As for Skodas Skippy is a Skoda man he can tell you all you need to know about them if he doesn't pop up on this thread PM him Insurance tends to vary a lot one broker will get a cheap deal for one driver and be expensive for another your best bet is to go onto the PHTM website which will have loads of brokers advertising on there phone at least 3 or 4 brokers minimum but remember nearly every broker will deal with the same insurance companies so sometimes if you phone too many brokers insurance companies refuse to quote if they've seen the same proposal 3 times from 3 different brokers |

Many will use local brokers. If however you want to spend a day ringing around (which might save you 100s) try some of the firms advertising in Private Hire Monthly. https://www.phtm.co.uk/newspaper/digital-edition |

Don't bother with the Rapid and Jetta they are to small, Octavia hatch or estate will be much better, the 1.4 tsi almost matches the 1.6 tdi on economy, and is far cheaper to service and run, road tax £30, try Patons insurance Glasgow, I only paid £540 this year for a 16 plate 1.4 Octavia, If you have any no claim bonus on your own car if you have one, you might be able to transfer it over. Do not get the 1.8 tsi nothing but trouble On your budget you should be on the look out for the 2ltr TDI Octavia you might get lucky and find a lowish milage one under 80K miles on auto trader https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201806027106737?model=OCTAVIA&postcode=td12ly&onesearchad=Used&advertising-location=at_cars&make=SKODA&maximum-mileage=80000&radius=1500&sort=sponsored&price-to=5000&year-from=2009&page=1 |

Insurance will be priced on:- Age Driving Licence held years Taxi/PH badge held years Accidents claims and convictions your postcode To a greater degree the car isnt very relevant, but anything over 5ltrs might sting |
