had a phone call tonight from the boss of another taxi company with a half hearted merger proposal

his plan to take on some very expensive premises next door to the main post office (about to be vacated by Prezzos) set up a 24 hour walk in office and slash prices on all village and out of town work by 25 to 40 percent.

He reckons that we would be able to double the number of drivers to cover the much higher costs as every driver for miles around would flock to work for the new larger company.

I got him off the phone as best I can but he wants me to discuss it with my drivers

The sad thing is he really thinks this would work

so lets have a vote sussex can you set a poll up on this thread please !!

five options

1) great idea

2) a screw lose

3) must have been high on drugs

4) needs sectioning

5) madder than the mad hatter

Why does he need your company? If it is that good an opportunity your drivers would flock to he super ideas company anyway.

I'd rather make more from doing less than discount and double my work load and along with it incur the extra costs just to make less than what I made before.

Guys an Idiot.

After some thought I guess it’s a good idea for the owners, after all that’s the way all the barons started, Delta, Blueline, City, Trafford, Uber, there in most towns and City’s. Why does he need Edders? I think he needs him because he don’t have enough to do it on his own.

Make him an offer.

Surely you have more chance of drivers joining if you have proper prices, not starvation ones.

Is that not the norm for P/H Operators, set starvation fares structure?

And that’s one of the reasons Uber is attracting cars.

Normal prices are in many places similar (ish) to the existing trade, but when it’s busy drivers can earn a few quid.

Exactly. We are running at 2006 rates ! On a Saturday night we can have 50+ jobs waiting, at our rates each job clocks an average £4, council rate £6. At that time on Uber they would probably be £10+.
Plus Uber dont charge if you take a week/day off, or make you work compulsory shifts, or issue fines. And if it's a quiet shift you only pay a % of each job done, unlike our office who still want a full days rent regardless.

Uber have a lot of bad points, but some good ones as well.

It would appear that you are an employee of the operator you are with,I would be asking for my holiday pay etc. off him.

Some people are afraid to even mention their rights in case they are told to go elsewhere. To be honest, if I were in that area I would set up a company and treat the driver right and see where that went. It is not difficult to do if you want to do it. A small office with a computer and dispatch system and you are away. The biggest problem is getting drivers to believe that there is a better option where they can keep more of the money they earn.
