Does any other local council apart from Barrow in Furness allow rooflights on private hire vehicles? This has been allowed here for a good few years but the licensing officer tried to change the conditions at the licensing subcommittee today but was knocked back.
We from the local trade supported the ban but the councilors against all legal advice didn't allow the change. Any suggestions about an appeal or complaint to the ombudsman? What's the procedure has anyone got any sensible advice?

Plenty that do allow PH roofsigns, but obviously not allowed to use the word taxi etc.

So does this mean the white colour code for HCs is back on?

When this was reported in the press earlier in the summer it read like it was fairly cut and dried - no colour code, and roofsigns off PH:

This has put the whole thing back to where we started. Can you tell me which council allows roof signs on private hire?

Can't name them all, unfortunately

Here's a few examples though. Suspect other readers can name lots of examples.

These seem to be licensed by Sandwell MBC:

If you look at Lettercraft's website - who I suspect are largest supplier of rooflights in UK - they have examples of signs obviously tailored for use by PHVs:

Wonder how many of these have a colour code for hackneys though. Reading the miscellaneous provisions act it seems to say that a private hire vehicle should not have anything that may lead the public to think that it's a Hackney carriage.

Good point about the colour code, but doubt if there's any hard and fast ruling which says you need a colour code before allowing PH roofsigns.

Sus-pect* a certain forum member may know the ins and outs of it all though, and may be better able to advise.

*See what I did there?

West Bromwich do require them on PH, seems madness to me, id have thought "Private" would preclude ANY signage... like mine does on a special ecents PH plate, no door signs, no rooflight and a very small rear plate

Wychavon have a "no plate plate"....................

In Sussex, B&H, Adur, Worthing, Mid Sussex, Arun, Horsham, Wealden, Hastings and Rother allow rooflights on PH.

At least two of the above were allowed by the courts following legal challenges.

If your LO is concerned about PH roof lights leading to illegal pick ups then I suggest he gets out there and convicts a few.
