What is the difference between a taxi and private hire car ? A taxi can be hailed in the street or can be pre-booked A private hire car must be pre-booked in advance through a private hire car company |

Thank you Mr HWM what council are we talking about? Surely your council's website must have some sort of info on the difference. So point the committee members in that direction. |

in all the La's I have ever seen is yes one can pick up off the street and the other is pre booked but also the Knowledge test differs for hacks it is more complex, not as complex as london I might add as PH in london does not have to do any knowledge at present whereas hacks have to do the knowledge which I believe takes around 2 years to master.

![]() Don't Aylesbury have two zones? Red plates restricted at 50 and white plates unrestricted at around 47? The DfT stats of 2004 made no mention of the unresticted white plates, I found that unusual. Private hire number around 400 according to the DfT. At the time the DfT report was published only one of the 50 restricted hackneys was purpose built. They reviewed their hackney policy last June and said they would review it again this year. Do you drive hackney or Private hire? Regards JD |

Aylesbury have 2 types of hackney plates we have the white hackney plate to service aylesbury town, the red hackney to service the rural areas in the aylesbury vale. We have around 50 white plates which are restricted, the red plate didnt have any restrictions but more and more private hire drivers started to get this type of plate and our licensing officer decided to put a halt on them as she felt they where using these to ply for hire in Aylesbury town. Im a red plate driver but mainly do private hire work in aylesbury. |

London private hire go to customers, whereas London taxis expect customers to go to them. Which is why I drive a Merc, and Mr GBC doesn't.

Erm? yes, thats what they are meant to do. You may drive a Merc (and who in London does'nt ) but I OWN mine.
