Post subject:  Sack or give him a stern warning ?

There are a number of drivers who work nights have been smoking cannabis over the last couple of years. One of my drivers has been increasingly difficult to deal with and short tempered which was ringing alarm bells. I have now had it confirmed to me by a friend of his that he is one of them. He has been working for me for over 10 years and by and large gets on well with customers

I am minded to give him a good talking to and make sure he understands the consequences. BUT am I being too soft should I just sack him before he gets caught or give him a chance to pack it in ?

I’ve smoked cannabis every day for the last forty years, and haven’t found it the least bit addictive.

He’ll not give up the weed, so you would be wasting your time giving him a talking too.

Tough choice, but your call.

Ask him to do a blood test

Introduce random drug testing at the office or have a word with plod

if he has a bump he will get tested, the headlines will read.......well, you can guess

he did have one last week (not whilst working) and was tested and was clear

He has admitted he has smoked weed But not regularly and not whilst at work but he now wants to move onto days. I made it very clear as to what the consequences might be if he did so i will keep an ear to the ground and see what happens.

Hopefully the problem is sorted

Get rid, this industry and drugs don't go down well at all.

If he's an employee then you really must go through the laid down disciplinary channels or you could face a hefty bill at an Employment Tribunal for unfair dismissal.

There's been recent changes to worker status and you may well find that those in what we now call the gig economy have the same rights as those on PAYE. If he's on the books but on a zero hours contract the easy way is to not offer any further work.

You can't sack someone on hearsay evidence.

You may want to introduce random drink and drugs testing for drivers. All rail operators do so as do a lot of bus and coach companies.

A very rare rarity in this trade.

Not sure for how much longer though.

Would be very surprised if any cab firms did this though - maybe Edders could blaze the trail and be the first in the country to do so

(Think may have read about some firm somewhere doing random tests, but certainly doubt it's widespread.)

We are very small 10 cars max so no that would be prohibitively expensive and as my drivers are truly self employed not sure I could legally but that is the sort of thing the council or police should be doing
